Why Won’t Hillary Clinton Give a Clear Answer on Abortion?

In a recent story for the Weekly Standard, John McCormack revealed that Hillary Clinton and her various mouthpieces were all declining to talk about abortion. The topic recently came up at a press event for Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who had just announced his candidacy for President. A reporter who happened to be attending the event asked Senator Paul to be specific about when he would be okay with exceptions to any abortion ban.

Instead of answering the question, Senator Paul took the opportunity to go on the offensive and shame the media for their lack of interest in what Democrats believe about abortion. In response to the question, here is what Paul said: “What’s the DNC say? Is it okay to kill a 7-pound baby in the uterus? Ask Debbie Wasserman Schultz when life begins and when she’s willing to protect life? When you get an answer then come back to me.”

The reason Paul’s counter is so effective is because it highlights the difference between the official Democrat stance on abortion and what all of the polls tell us Americans think about abortion. Most Americans (84% of them in fact) believe in a late term abortion ban, but Debbie Wasserman Schultz (who leads the DNC) and Hillary Clinton (the heir apparent in the Democrat Party) both believe that there should be no restrictions on abortion… ever. This is proof positive that when it comes to abortion, it’s the Democrats who are the extremists.

In 2005, Hillary Clinton said that “government should have no role” in limiting the right to abortion–a remark very similar to the one made by Wasserman Schultz this week. “This decision, which is one of the most fundamental, difficult, and soul-searching decisions a woman and a family can make, is also one in which the government should have no role,” Clinton said at the time.

But at other times, Clinton has claimed that she’d be willing to support a ban on late-term abortion. “I have said many times that I can support a ban on late-term abortions, including partial-birth abortions, so long as the health and life of the mother is protected,” Clinton said in a 2000 New York senatorial debate. Clinton did not define “health,” and supporters of a right to abortion have typically defined health exceptions so broadly–to include “mental and emotional” health–that any restriction on late-term abortion would be rendered meaningless. (In 2008, Barack Obama endorsed late-term abortion bans without a mental health exception, but quickly backtracked.)

C’mon America, do you really want to vote for someone who thinks killing a full term, healthy baby is morally acceptable? Doesn’t this call into question the very basis for that person’s morality? Doesn’t that make it seem like this person might just be a homicidal maniac? We’re America and we used to frown on murder.

Let’s be the kind of country that frowns on murder again.
