If the GOP does not start getting some legislation passed, then we could see what Ted Cruz is calling a “midterm bloodbath.”
Cruz said, “If tax reform crashes and burns, if [on] ObamCare, nothing happens, we could face a bloodbath,” and that without the party passing its biggest agenda items, we will see a “Watergate-level blowout.”
In that scenario, Cruz is referencing the elections of 1974, when the Democrats won stole 43 seats in the House, amid the Watergate scandal.
In other words, the GOP politicians need to get their heads out of their rear ends (Mitch McConnell and John McCain, this means you two!!) and get something done!
Perhaps we will see a budge on healthcare though, as White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short told CNN that the White House is confident that they will have the votes to repeal ObamaCare in the Spring.
Short said, “I think that this year in some ways we ran out of time. What happened is because you’re looking to repeal Obamacare under budget reconciliation, that budget window closed on September 30th. ”
He continued, “What we found with the Graham-Cassidy idea of block granting dollars back to the states, getting Washington, DC out of the way of trying to control healthcare and letting states have more flexibility in the plans, there became more and more receptivity to it,” he added,” But there are a couple of members who are worried about the process and felt there weren’t enough hearings and questions.”
Short concluded, “We now believe, when we get the next chance, that we now have the commitments for the votes. But the reality is, that that probably won’t be until a 2019 budget’s passed sometime next spring.”
