WHAT?? Mother Arrested for Punishing 15-Yr-Old Daughter by Taking Cell Phone Away

Police in Michigan idiotically arrested a mother who punished her teen daughter by taking her cell phone away from her.

Police in Michigan idiotically arrested a mother who punished her teen daughter by taking a cell phone away from the girl. You read that right, police ACTUALLY arrested this mom for disciplining her daughter.

The incident wrapped up last week in Hudsonville, Michigan, where a prosecutor finally dropped the charges Tuesday against mother Jodie May. But the whole thing should never have gotten to the point where prosecutors were considering charges in the first place.

“I would like answers on why it got so far and how it got this far, where this happened within my home. I’m disciplining my child, then I’m being the one handcuffed,” May told WOOD-TV.

Just before Mother’s Day in May of this year, as she was nursing her four-month-old baby, Jodie May heard a knock on her door. When she answered it was the police who informed her that her 15-year-old daughter had called the police on her because May “stole” the girl’s cell phone.

The officers idiotically said that the mom was to be arrested on a misdemeanor theft charge.

“He had told me that he was going to arrest me, and I asked him if I could turn myself in on that Monday by myself, that I had a new baby. She wasn’t taking the bottle yet,” May said.

But the officers refused to allow the request and hauled the mother off to jail that instant. She was released on a $200 bond a few hours later and then given a court date for her case.

The whole thing comes down to the fact that May took her daughter’s cell phone away after the girl got in trouble at school. This is a typical parental move, after all! Nothing untoward or illegal about it.

Sadly, some of the fault for this is also laid at the feet of an ignorant, divorced father. It appears that the spoiled little 15-year-old ran to daddy to tell him mom “stole” the phone. And like too many jackass parents involved in nasty divorces, this man used his daughter as a weapon to attack his ex-wife.

In any case, the biggest fault is the officers who made the arrest. They should never have done it. And prosecutors admitted as much by totally dropping the charges. The phone did not belong to the ex-husband, but to the daughter, so prosecutors admitted that the mom had every right to use the device as a punishment.

But, it should never have gotten to a court in the first lace. These officers wasted the state’s time and money. In this case it was the police who “acted stupidly,” if I might borrow a phrase.
