For now, Trump is saying that the U.S. is going to stay out of Libya. But we know from past experience that one day the administration will say they’re not going to get involved in the internal affairs of another country, and then the next day, video surfaces of dead and dying children, and then the U.S. takes swift military action in response.
So, for now, the President says he sees no role for the U.S. to get involved in Libya. That could very well change, however, in the blink of an eye.
The President made his comments while in a joint press conference at the White House with that nation’s prime minister Paolo Gentiloni.
“I do not see a role in Libya,” Trump said in response to a question about intervening in the Middle Eastern country. “I think the United States has right now enough roles. We’re in a role everywhere, so I do not see that.”
However, the President said that that doesn’t affect the U.S.’s policy toward ISIS:
“I do see a role in getting rid of ISIS. We’re being very effective in that regard. We are doing a job, with respect to ISIS, that has not been done anywhere near the numbers that we’re producing right now. It’s a very effective force we have. We have no choice. It’s a horrible thing to say, but we have no choice.
“And we are effectively ridding the world of ISIS. I see that as a primary role, and that’s what we’re going to do, whether it’s in Iraq or in Libya or anywhere else, and that role will come to an end at a certain point, and we’ll be able to go back home and rebuild our country, which is what I want to do.”
I hope we stay out of Libya. Trump is right. We’re already spread thin as it is. There’s no sense in getting involved in Libya.
I have no trouble believing that Trump personally and sincerely wants to stay out of foreign wars and conflicts. But those who are surrounding him have vested interests in creating and maintaining havoc and instability in that region. I hope that he sees that and resists their attempts to drag the U.S. into another conflict.
