President Donald Trump is set to have the fewest number of refugees entering the U.S. in forty years, a report says.
According to the New York Post, by next year Trump will have cut the number of refugees down to 30,000, the lowest number in 40 years.
This new number of 30,000 – which starts with the fiscal year Oct. 1 – is the lowest since 1980, when the modern refugee program was first established.
As a comparison, in President Obama’s final year, America welcomed nearly 85,000 refugees.
“The improved refugee policy of this administration serves the national interest of the United States, and expands our ability to help those in need all around the world,” according to a statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We are and continue to be the most generous nation in the world.”
Naturally, liberal groups are furious at the policy change.
Former British lawmaker David Miliband, now president of the International Rescue Committee, decried the US cutback.
“The US is not only abdicating humanitarian leadership and responsibility-sharing in response to the worst global displacement and refugee crisis since the Second World War, but compromising critical strategic interests and reneging on commitments to allies and vulnerable populations,” Miliband said.
The new numbers might make the Dalai Lama, for one, feel that the whole thing is merely a good start.
It appears that Tibett’s spiritual leader is not a big fan of refugees. Recently he was heard urging the millions of Muslim refugees flooding into Europe to go back to their homelands and stop trying to invade other countries.
The Lama wasn’t cagy, or subtle about his comments, either. In a press conference during a visit to Sweden, the Lama said that “Europe belongs to the Europeans” and added that the refugees should all be sent home.
According to Breitbart London:
Speaking in the multicultural city of Malmö, where nearly half of residents are of foreign background, with Iraqis making up the largest single group, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism said Sweden is seen as “a peaceful, generally prosperous country” with a relatively small gap between rich and poor.
“Spontaneously”, reports Norrköpings Tidningar, the Dalai Lama then “moved on to talk about one of the biggest issues in the Swedish election — the reception of refugees”.
Noting that a large number of immigrants have settled in Europe from the Middle East and elsewhere, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning spiritual leader said it was good for nations to help “a refugee really facing danger against their life”.
“Receive them, help them, educate them… but ultimately they should develop their own country,” said the 83-year-old Tibetan.
“I think Europe belongs to the Europeans,” he added, stressing that countries like Germany and Sweden should make clear that refugees must “return to their homelands and rebuild them”.
Wow. That is all pretty straight forward, isn’t it? No room for “interpretation,” there! Looks like the Dalai Lama is on the same page as Trump, anyway.
