Black Friday has become an American Christmas tradition that is often accompanied by public brawls.

The new American Christmas tradition of mob violence on Black Friday began early this year when the largest mall in Alabama had to be closed due to brawls on Thanksgiving night. There’s something wrong with American culture when a day on national thanksgiving and a day celebrating the birth of Jesus bracket a season of fights around consumer goods.

Hoover police and firefighters responded to the shopping center after 11 p.m. on at least one fight in a store on the mall’s second floor. Reports of gunfire quickly spread on social media, but authorities said reports of shots fired were not confirmed and no one was shot. Lt. Keith Czeskleba said Friday they did receive calls of shots fired outside of the Galleria but responding officers believe it was someone shooting off fireworks.

Hoover Fire paramedics treated one victim on the scene for minor injuries sustained in a fight. No one was transported to the hospital. Officers said the fights were not over sales, but of a personal nature.

There were reports of several arrests stemming from the fights. However, Hoover police said there were no arrests.
