State Department Spokeswoman Calls her Own Talking Point “Ridiculous”!

In what was a rare moment of honesty from the Obama Administration, it seems that State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki admitted that a talking point she just used was patently “ridiculous.”

This kind of thing… is not normal… but it is funny.

It happened when reporters were asking for comment on the recent acquittal of former Egyptian President (and dictator) Hosni Mubarak, by an Egyptian court. Psaki’s prepared response was weak, at best, but as the briefing ends she can be heard saying to a nearby reporter “that Egypt point is ridiculous.”

Her comments seemed to stem from back and forth with Associated Press reporter Matt Lee. The spokeswoman seemed reticent to give any response on the acquittal of President Mubarak finally saying, “Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends.” But Psaki would not say if that had happened in the Mubarak case, leading reporters to puzzlement.

“Are you suggesting it wasn’t impartial?” asked Lee.

“I don’t have any more specifics,” she said.

“But I, I – wow, I don’t understand that at all. What does that mean?” pressed Lee. “Were those standards upheld in this case?”

“I don’t have anything – any specific comment on the case,” Psaki repeated. “I’d point you to the Egyptian government.”

“What you said says nothing,” said Lee. “It’s like saying, ‘Well, we support the right of people to breathe.’ Well, that’s great, but if they can’t breathe –”

“If we have a further comment on the case, I will make sure all of you have it,” Psaki said.

Apparently, even Psaki realized that her talking points were indeed “ridiculous,” choosing to admit as much to Lee after the press conference was odd though.

Once again, the Obama administration leaves everyone scratching their heads. Could they really be this incompetent? What does it say about the rest of us that we still can’t be sure after 6 full years? Incompetence or purposeful stupidity… you decide.
