During the confirmation hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein once again trotted out her lies about guns. At one point she lied saying that so-called “assault weapons” have been used in “hundreds” of school shootings. But, yep, that is a straight out lie.
In fact, it isn’t a lie by a little. It is a lie by actual “hundreds” because it turns out that even by the most liberal count, assault weapons-styled rifles have been used only a handful of times in such crimes, not “hundreds.”
The truth is, assault weapons are not typically used in school shootings. Pistols are. As the Daily Caller noted in a FactCheck article, “a review by The Daily Caller News Foundation shows that rifles were used in up to 32 school shootings in recent decades.”
Of course, the number of “school shootings” is in dispute over the way they are characterized. But one thing is 100 percent positive, there have not been hundreds of school shootings in the USA regardless of how you define the term.
So, for Feinstein to say that assault weapons have been used in “hundreds of school shootings” is a flat out lie. Not only are rifles used in less than 20 percent of school shootings, but there haven’t even BEEN “hundreds of school shootings” in the first place.
In any case, Feinstein has said that a “common thread” n school shootings is the AR-15 and other assault weapons. But she is simply a lair.
Here is a little of what Daily Caller said about Feinstein’s lies:
Firearm experts told us, however, that assault-style pistols and shotguns are rarely used in school shootings. William Vizzard, a professor of criminal justice at California State University- Sacramento, couldn’t recall many incidents involving them.
“There are a few oddball pistols that get included, but other than the 1993 shooting in San Francisco with a Tech 9, I am unaware of any being used in mass shootings. In general, the argument does center on military style rifles,” Vizzard told TheDCNF.
One comprehensive study done by The Washington Post found that out of 221 school shootings since Columbine, 24 involved rifles. (The weapon field is missing for 34 entries in the database, so the actual number may be slightly higher.)
Data collected by Mother Jones that dates back to 1982 shows only 10 instances of rifles being used in a total of 18 school shootings.
An FBI report found that from 2000 to 2013 there were 39 cases of active shooter incidents at educational facilities (26 of which were at primary or secondary schools), and of these, eight involved any sort of rifle. FBI active shooter incident reports from 2014 through 2017 describe 13 active shooter incidents at schools, and five of these involved rifles.
A report by the Rockefeller Institute for Government, a New York-based think tank, shows that from 1966 to 2016 there were 94 school shootings and 32 involved a rifle.
A database from Stanford University shows that of 67 documented school shootings from 1966 to 2016, 24 involved some sort of rifle.
There is disparity in how the actual shootings are measured. Some of the incidents were not “mass shootings” but suicides or gang warfare. Others were accidental firings where no one was being threatened. Still, even with an expansive method we get numbers like “32 rifles” or “1o rifles,” not “hundreds” as the lying Senator from California says.
Even if you go afield from school shootings and include all mass shootings, the number isn’t “hundreds.” Daily Caller ended its piece with this:
The Rockefeller Institute listed 340 mass shootings between 1966 and 2016 and 28.5 percent – or 97 – of them involved a rifle. Another study done by Texas State University found that of 84 active shooter events that occurred between 2000 and 2010, 27 percent involved rifles.
Well, at least that statistic makes it almost one hundred!
Mark this one as proving that Sen. Dianne Feinstein is a liar.
This is also a good time to remind everyone of the lie spread around after the school shooting in Florida this year when liberals began passing around the claim that there were “18 school shootings in the USA in the first few months of 2018 but only 18 in the last 20 years in schools in the rest of the world.”
This one was so outrageous, even the left-wing PolitiFact had to call it an outright lie.
