Saturday Night Live is being attacked by both the left and the right after a seriously questionable “joke” making fun of a U.S. veteran because he lost an eye in service to his country.
During last weekend’s SNL, cast member Pete Davidson disgorged a “joke” that upset nearly everyone who heard it when he ridiculed Republican Congressional candidate and former Navy SEAL Dan Crenshaw because he lost an eye at war.
“This guy is kind of cool — Dan Crenshaw. You may be surprised to hear he’s a Congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever. Whatever,” Davidson said on SNL Saturday.
Davidson — who looked like he was dressed in an orange jumpsuit from some penitentiary — may have thought dismissively saying “whatever” about a man who sustained a grievous injury in service to the country was “funny,” but no one else apparently did.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) immediately slammed the SNL actor for his hateful “joke.”
“Getting dumped by your pop star girlfriend is no excuse for lashing out at a decorated war hero who lost his eye serving our country. Pete Davidson and NBC should immediately apologize to Dan, and to the millions of veterans and military families who tune in every weekend–because they’re not laughing,” the NRCC statement read.

But it wasn’t just people on the right side of the political aisle who thought the “joke” was in bad taste.
Socialist “reporter” Karen Tumulty, for instance, thought NBC should apologize:
NBC should apologize — and make a very large contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project. https://t.co/0J9e68WHNg

Liberal reporter Katie Clueck also took the occasion to point out to NBC where it erred:
Daily Beast writer Michael Weiss found the “joke” to be in bad taste:
He was more somber and reflective about his breakup with a pop star than he was about a Navy Seal who lost an eye to an IED in Afghanistan. https://t.co/lVXNVM2Zi8

Others slammed SNL and Davidson, too:
And if you are going to make an argument that it’s appropriate to make fun of a man who lost his eye serving America, save your time pls and just go away. https://t.co/AurqW6XmTD

For his part, Dan Crenshaw also took a slap at NBC:
Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.

I just have to wonder, though, if Petey Davidson is at all annoyed that Ellen DeGeneres does his look better than he does?
