Questions & Answers: Obama & the Controversy over His Place of Birth

“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”  —Article 2, Section 1, US Constitution

Was Barack H. Obama America’s First Foreign-Born President?

The first president to be suspected of being born outside the US was President Chester A. Arthur.  Officially born in Fairfield, Vermont, some have argued that Arthur was really born in Quebec, Canada.  Burke’s Presidential Families of the United States of America (available at Amazon here: states that Arthur “was probably born in Canada.”  Many historians agree, but most argue that, since he was “natural born” to US citizens, Arthur’s eligibility for the presidency was legitimate and non-controversial.  One thing is certain.  President Arthur loved his country, so it never became a big issue with the public during his tenure in office.

A Few Words on the Natural Born Citizen Clause

Before the Fourteenth Amendment, there was no clause in the Constitution mentioning citizenship specifically for people born in the United States.  “Natural born” was taken to mean that one was born to parents of American origin.  A child born to US parents in France, for example, has never been allowed to claim French citizenship.  So where does the child’s citizenship reside?  In America, of course.  It is a fact that Republican presidential candidate John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone to American parents; thus, his eligibility to be president was based on his parents’ US citizenship.

Arthur Guarantees Continuance of the Mystery

Chester A. Arthur became president six months into Garfield’s term, when President Garfield was assassinated.  Arthur suffered secretly from a fatal kidney disease while in office and did not receive his party’s nomination for a second term as president.  In 1885, Arthur returned to practicing law in New York City.  As Arthur’s health worsened, he ordered all of his personal and professional papers burned, thus ensuring that questions of his national origin would remain permanently unsettled.  Chester A. Arthur died on November 17, 1886, at the age of 57, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.

Obama’s Probable Kenyan Birth

The fact that Obama had an American parent in Stanley Ann Dunham means that his status as a “natural born” citizen of the United States is secure.  But the importance of Obama’s probable birth outside of the US is interesting primarily as an example of the lengths Obama is willing to go to manipulate his public image.  The web of mendacity that Obama is likely to have woven, in order to deceive the American public, is mind-boggling to consider.

Why So Many Believe Obama Is Foreign-Born

Obama ChoomThe literary agency Acton & Dystel, acting on behalf of Barack Obama, produced a promotional brochure for him in 1991 to advertise Journeys in Black and White, which ended up never actually seeing production.  The brochure was used to promote Obama as an up-and-coming author within the publishing industry.  The actual text the brochure presented of Obama’s biography was, and is, quite startling.

The Text of the Acton & Dystel Brochure

The text of Obama’s biography, as stated in the publicity brochure, reads as follows:  “Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.  The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, he attended Columbia University and worked as a financial journalist and editor for Business International Corporation.  He served as project coordinator in Harlem for the New York Public Interest Research Group, and was Executive Director of the Developing Communities Project in Chicago’s South Side.  His commitment to social and racial issues will be evident in his first book, Journeys in Black and White.”  (See the actual brochure here:

The liberal media like to imply that this 1991 publicity brochure is the sole source of the claim that Obama was born in Kenya.  Not only has that brochure been updated many times between its first appearance, in 1991, and April 3, 2007, with the information about Obama’s birthplace in Kenya remaining unchanged all the while (see, but there are other sources of information indicating that Kenya is wont to be Obama’s true place of birth.

Allen Hulton’s Run-In with “Foreign Student” Obama

Obama muslimAllen Hulton, a retired Chicago-area mailman, recalls a young man he has identified as Obama living on his mail route, back when Hulton still worked as a letter carrier, delivering mail to Mary and Tom Ayers in a Chicago suburb in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  He met Obama in front of the Ayers home.  Hulton gave a sworn affidavit to investigators hired by Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, who had been investigating President Obama to determine whether Obama was eligible for Arizona’s 2012 election ballot.

Hulton learned from Mary Ayers of the couple’s enthusiasm and support for a black “foreign student.”  Mary and Tom Ayers are now deceased, but Hulton delivered their mail, from 1986 to 1997.  Hulton said that the help being offered Obama by Mary and Tom Ayers seemed to be financial.  They were helping him get his education.  Tom Ayers was, in fact, the father of Bill Ayers, who helped Obama launch his political career.  Tom Ayers was a domineering figure in Chicago politics.  It was Tom Ayers who helped Obama get his job at Sidley Austin, where he eventually would meet Michelle.  (Read more, and see excerpts of Jerome Corsi’s interviews with Allen Hulton at

Obama Family Statements That Obama’s Home Country Is Kenya

While talking to a crowd about HIV testing, Michelle Obama talks about how she and Barack Obama got HIV tested together, as a couple.  Michelle Obama says, during her statement, that she and Barack “visited his home country in Kenya.”  (Watch Michelle’s statement here:

Obama’s grandmother, Sarah, has also said that Barack Obama was born in Kenya.  There is one instance where she was caught on a recording calling Barack Obama a native of her village in Kenya, and there is a second recording where she says that she was present at Obama’s birth in her village in Kenya.  (You can find both of these recordings using the following two links: &

But the most convincing evidence of Barack Obama’s Kenyan origins comes straight from the horse’s—or, perhaps, the donkey’s—mouth.  Obama himself has been caught on videotape saying, “Well, first of all, it’s true.  I’m not an American.  I was not born in Hawaii.  I was not born in the United States of America.  I come from Kenya.”  And, while talking about his low poll numbers in the US, Obama also said, “I happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth.”  (Watch these statements here:

Spinning & Spinning

While Democrat operatives have spent many hours explaining away these sound bites, among others, many “birthers”—as they are disrespectfully referred to—have reached their own conclusions as to the true birthplace of the man who now resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  Perhaps what is most distressing is not the charge that Obama has been lying about his place of birth, but the lack of integrity of the American press.  It is the job of the media to give a full vetting to each and every candidate for the presidency.  The American public, however, is still very much in the dark about Barack Obama—his origins, his childhood, and his belief system.  Beyond a superficial exercise on Obama’s part to write what he himself desires the public to know—in The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father—not much has been called into question by the liberal media with regard to the most powerful man in the world.  And this has been to the utter detriment of our country.

So, who is Barack Obama, and where exactly was he born?  You decide.
