President Obama: To Golf or not to Golf?

President Obama is taking a lot of flack (well-deserved, by the way) for his propensity to go golfing when he should probably be focusing on other matters. But all of the criticism really got rolling when he chose to golf immediately after delivering a national message on the murder of freelance journalist James Foley.

Foley was murdered by ISIS terrorists just a couple of days ago and ISIS is using his death as a ploy to try to intimidate us from getting involved in Iraq and Syria.

President Obama’s lackluster response, coupled with his golf outing, has earned him some attacks from sources he probably never expected an attack from.

Here’s how the New York Daily News responded.

Here’s a bit of what the article actually said…

President Obama put his own spin on the oft-quoted advice of predecessor Teddy Roosevelt: speak strongly and carry a nine iron.

The vacationing commander-in-chief returned to the golf course Wednesday after calling for justice in the brutal killing of an American journalist by ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) terrorists.

How about a quote from Britain’s the Daily Mail? The Brits were particularly brutal…

Thursday’s round is his eighth in 11 days. Wire photos of the president and his playing partners depict a more serious commander-in-chief with none of the yukking that characterized photos a day ago.

His high-fiving on Wednesday has brought a chorus of condemnation from TV commentators, journalists, conservative partisans and Twitter users.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters could hardly contain his anger Wednesday night on the Fox News Channel as he discussed Obama’s reactions to the ISIS terror network’s beheading of Foley, an American who had been missing since 2012.

‘There is no way the president should be stupid enough to go play golf’ after such a somber speech, Peters said.

‘Not only did he insult the Foley family; he sent a message to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (the leader of ISIS) and all of the other jihadi terrorist militants – now soldiers of a jihadi army – that he doesn’t take it all seriously.’

Even some of President Obama’s usual defenders are having a hard time defending Wednesday and Thursday’s golf outings.

This is conservative Ross Douthat…

and now liberal Obama defender Ezra Klein…

However, not everyone thinks Obama’s golf outings are necessarily a “bad” thing. MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough seemed to think that while the optics may be bad domestically – President Obama’s decision to golf sends a message to the ISIS terrorists. That message being that Obama is “one cold bastard,” who won’t let terrorism interfere with his “normal” life.

“Because this is how they make their money, right?” Scarborough said Thursday on Morning Joe. “Al Qaeda funded their operations by kidnapping Europeans and getting ransom money… I’m sure there may even be one or two terrorists over in Syria right now that are looking at him and going ‘Wow, that’s one cold bastard. He goes golfing?’”

“These are horrible, horrible optics domestically. But for terrorists it’s basically, ‘Screw you. We’re not going to live by your rules.’”

So, dear reader, what do you think? Is President Obama’s predilection for playing golf something the average American should be sick of? Or is he really just showing the terrorists that he’s “one cold bastard” by keepin’ on keepin’ on?
