President George W. Bush says Garner Grand Jury Decision “Hard to Understand”

Count President Bush among the many, many conservatives who have come to the side of the Garner family as they seek justice for the death of Eric Garner. We’ve recently discussed the differences between the Garner killing and the shooting death of Michael Brown. We also talked about the way the Garner case seems to be “generally” uniting the left and right in outrage that the grand jury did not indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner.

Well, you can now count President George W. Bush among those conservatives who just don’t get how the grand jury could fail to indict in this case.

“The verdict was hard to understand. I haven’t seen all the details, but it’s sad that race continues to play such an emotional, divisive part of life.”

President Bush was on CNN speaking to Candy Crowley when she asked him about his thoughts on the situation. The former President expressed his dismay, not just with the grand jury, but in general with where race relations are today in America. He went on to discuss how he believed that race relations were much better today than they were some 30+ years ago, and he mentioned a recent discussion he had with the former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. In that conversation Ms. Rice mentioned her concern that increasingly in today’s African-American community there is a growing distrust of law enforcement, “which is a shame, because law enforcement’s job is to protect everybody.”
