House Speaker Paul Ryan is (surprisingly) praising President Donald Trump for his “tremendous compassion” when it comes to victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
I often do not like Paul Ryan because he tends to be shady and appears weak. He is a Republican but there have been many times that he has sided against the interests of Republicans. This is why I am surprised to see him take Trump’s side, and even praise him, on a situation.
While talking to MSNBC on Saturday morning, Ryan said, “I have talked to him about these things. He has tremendous compassion.” He also added that Trump is trying his best to avoid “jeopardizing” any of the relief efforts.
Ryan continued, “He is flying to these emergencies as soon as he can without jeopardizing responses. He is stopping what he’s doing. We have talked about the supplementals, these issues. The people who are suffering from these tragedies are in his mind front and center.”
The Hill reports:
Trump has faced criticism from Democrats and members of the media for his remarks and his handling of Puerto Rico’s hurricane recovery efforts. On Friday, “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda blasted the president for “adding insult to injury” with his visit to the island after a tweet that suggested Puerto Rican leaders aren’t doing enough to help themselves in the recovery.
“I’ve never seen the president attack the victims of a natural disaster,” Miranda, who is of Puerto Rican descent, told MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes.”
“I’ve never seen a president attack the elected officials on the front line of a disaster,” he said.
“At the same time, it’s jaw-dropping,” continued Miranda. “This has been an unprecedented disaster and it deserves an unprecedented response, or at least commiserate with the two other hurricanes that have also ravaged the United States of America.”
Miranda’s comments refer to President Trump stating that the San Juan mayor got “nasty” with him all of a sudden after ‘Democrats told her she had to be nasty with him.’
Trump actually tweeted out, “The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump.” He added, “Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.”
Is this a fact? Who knows. It does show that the San Juan mayor was being very nice and then suddenly turned on Trump even though he was sending relief and even waived the Jones Act to bolster relief efforts.
Another thing I have come to realize is that President Trump is often right when it comes to things like this, where everyone calls him crazy and then suddenly something comes out, proving him correct.
