President Obama and top ranking officials in the intelligence community have been saying that there is a strong consensus in the nation’s spy agencies that Russia was behind hacks into the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) computer systems and John Podesta’s email account.
They take it further and say that Russians hacked into these systems for the purpose of helping Trump win. And not only that, but they’re increasingly implicating Russian President Vladimir Putin himself for directing the hacks.
Now, the President is promising that there will be consequences for Russia’s supposed actions.
There are a number of things at play here that are difficult to reconcile.
For one, the intelligence establishment never claimed that Russia messed with our voting systems. The way that Russia supposedly disrupted the election was by hacking the DNC’s computers and Podesta’s emails, and then giving those documents to WikiLeaks to distribute, knowing that it would make Hillary look bad.
But compare that idea with what Obama had told Trevor Noah.
“What is it about our political ecosystem,” the President said in an interview with the Daily Show host. “What is it about the state of our democracy where the leaks of what were frankly not very interesting emails that didn’t have any explosive information in them… ended up being an obsession, and the fact that the Russians were doing this was not an obsession?”
“What’s happened to our political system where some emails that were hacked and released ended up being the overwhelming story and the constant source of coverage, breathless coverage,” Obama continued, “That was depicted as somehow damning in all sorts of ways when the truth of the matter was it was fairly routine stuff.”
So, on one hand, there was nothing bad in these emails. They just showed the mundane, day-to-day operations of a typical political campaign – nothing to write home about.
On the other hand, these “fairly routine” emails had the effect of swaying the election in Trump’s favor. How does that work exactly?
(As an aside, was the leaked Access Hollywood tape not released and obsessed over in the media for the purpose of swaying the election in Hillary’s favor? Were Trump’s 1995 tax returns not released and obsessed over in the media for the purpose of swaying the election in Hillary’s favor? Those actually were damning materials and were treated as such in the media. This is politics. It’s nasty. You dig up dirt and filth on your opponent and sling it in his – or her – face. So, why are the Democrats so upset about Podesta’s and the DNC’s “uninteresting” emails?)
There’s no reason to get mad at Russia for releasing “boring” material that apparently should have had no effect.
But wait, there’s more.
So, the ongoing narrative is that Russian hackers meddled in our election to help Trump win. But you know how liberals are always bragging about how Hillary got almost 2 million more votes than Trump? How does that work?
It’ll be interesting to see what the Obama administration is actually going to do to Russia or Putin in response to their alleged meddling in our election. It is my opinion that they won’t do much, if anything, because they don’t really believe the narrative they’re peddling.
I think this has been a sideshow to cast doubt in people’s minds – perhaps in particular the Electoral College – about the legitimacy of Trump’s win.
