Not So Fast Mr. McCarthy – Conservatives aren’t Ready to Hand Over the Speakership

Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s recent rendition of placing the cart in front of the horse wasn’t just a one liner or a misplaced word in a statement.  Oh no, this was a grander and more detailed error and it why his supportive ranks are thinning.

This faux pas took the same time to state as it now does to read.  Quoting the brash California Congressman from a Peggy Noonan column, “What you’re gonna see is a conservative speaker that takes a conservative Congress that puts a strategy to fight and win.  And let me give you one example.  Everyone thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?  But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee.  What are her numbers today?  Her numbers are dropping.  Why?  Because she’s untrustable.  But no one would have known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen.”

It is somewhat evident that his words appear somewhat disjointed, maybe caused by an uncomfortable or nervous presentation?  Even so, it’s obvious that an innocent misspeak is not the culprit.

So now, what does this ambitious, young, middle-of-the-road representative do?  He back peddles.  From a CNN Theodore Schieifer report, “This committee was set up for one sole purpose, to find the truth on behalf of families for four dead Americans.  Now I did not imply in any way that that work is political, of course it is not.”  He then added, “That committee is solely to get the truth out, but it happened with the truth you found out about a server.”

Kevin McCarthyMcCarthy’s original utterance had to be an intentional statement, if only based upon it’s length.  Also, he was quite defined in his message so to deny is to self incriminate.  There is no slip of the tongue or even the possibility of a media misquote.  So, what to make of his rebuttal?

It’s sad simply because after almost five years of such weak posturing and subsequent retractions, the American public became eager for a fresh, positive and a more honest approach.  Now, even before he is sworn into office, McCarthy is tainted with suspicion.

Not only will this follow him and the republicans, especially as this election season heats up, it will add ammo to the democratic ranks.  Almost immediately, the floundering Clinton campaign got a huge shot in the arm.   In addition to her never ending denials, she can now point to the mischievous republicans and their calloused disregard of the four who died in Benghazi.

In fact, from the same Wall St Journal column, A Week of Political Failures, Ms. Noonan writes that “Mrs. Clinton responded with her own special brand of faux-sadness, telling Al Sharpton that Mr. McCarthy’s statement ‘dishonors’ those who died.”

As her audacity competes with her indifference, this new beginning of sorts validates the recklessness of McCarthy’s false assertion.  Already, this is definitely not the caliber of a Speaker which Americans were expecting.

Amid this campaign season, with the democratic bare bones candidate list verses the republican’s bloated slate, theories and strategies abound.  One in particular bears significance if FDR’s warning about the give and take in Washington remains relevant.  From many decades past, that democrat icon said that, “In politics, nothing happens by accident.  If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.”

So, why would this McCarthy flub be mired in any degree of intrigue?  Well, at this early point, it’s obvious that the democrat party cannot afford to officially endorse a socialist.  With Clinton’s sliding numbers, what better way to close the gap than to give her a little victimhood?  Clearly, Biden is an alternative but is more of a last ditched alternative.  Clinton is the choice but she cannot continue her nose dive.

Also, maybe this ray of sunshine diminishes Biden’s attractiveness to the array of democratic donors.  It’s not that he would become the anointed one but at this point, Hillary doesn’t need another inner party threat.

And in true conspiratorial fashion, what better way of ingratiating himself with his opposition than to gift wrap a Clinton favor?  As stated previously, such a lengthy explanation couldn’t be misconstrued as a verbal blunder but it very well could be interpreted as offering support to her flimsy October 22nd Benghazi testimony.  Those witnessing from the other side of the aisle will remember.

Another consideration is McCarthy’s arrogance and disrespect for such a sensitive issue.  From all of the “examples” to choose from, he picks a topic which is most heart wrenching, and the one which Hillary is scheduled to testify on later this month.  Also, he voiced this untruth despite the uproar which he knew would follow.  All this he weighed yet chose to offer this life jacket to a sinking Hillary.

Even though unsubstantiated, and yes, for whatever the reasoning, I think that the appearance of shenanigans, by McCarthy, weighs in on the probable rather than the possible side of the scale.

In closing, the public’s clamor for change is thunderous. All one has to do is check the leader board of the republican slate.  And I think that this might be the one factor that McCarthy misread.  In reaction to his premature gaffe and also by addressing this outcry against the establishment, Rep. Jason Chaffetz is about to throw his hat into the Speaker race.  The Congressman from Utah would be a much needed Constitutional stalwart.  Not only does he need our support, we need him just as much!
