Norway Schools and Universities to Ban Full-Face Veils

Perhaps Norway is a step ahead of the western world as they move towards banning full-faced veils on campuses of schools and universities.

On Monday, Norwegian lawmakers pushed bill to ban the full-face cloth that many other European countries have already banned. The party pushing for the ban argued that the veil hinders communication between students and teachers. Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen stated, “These clothes prevent good communication, which is important for students to receive a good education.”

Isaken continued,  “We have every reason to believe this will be approved by Parliament.”

However, the opposing party argued that it may not be a relevant bill considering that the full-face veil is not commonly worn in mass across the country. Linda Noor of Minotenk stated, “This is a marginal problem in the integration context.”

Fox News reports:

European countries that currently have restrictions on full-face veils in public places include France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria and Austria.

The acting Minister of Immigration and Integration, Per Sandberg, said that employees and students who insist on wearing a veil risk losing their job or expulsion from college.

If the ban is approved, Norway would be the first Nordic country to have a ban on full-face veils for both children and adults, according to the New York Times. Headscarves, hats, and caps will be allowed.

Parliament is expected to approve the ban next year, the BBC reported.

I think there are many more reasons why the full-face veil should be banned across the world, but my opinion is not generally the popular one. What do you think? Should they be banned in Norway, and perhaps the rest of the world too? Why or why not? Does it have anything to do with the communication barrier it creates or is it much more than that?
