Left-wing activist groups expressed outrage today that Senate Democrats agreed to a plan pushed by Sen. GOP leader Mitch McConnell to push through 15 more of President Donald Trump’s judges before the end of this legislative session.
Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R, KY) announced the deal on Thursday which will allow the Senate to take a vote on a package of 15 judges the president has nominated so that the Senate can then go into recess early ahead of the November 6 general election.
According to reports, the deal has been struck not just to vote on the judges, but to get them all swiftly confirmed.
McConnell sold the idea as a way to allow Democrats to get home early to campaign.
The development is welcome news for vulnerable incumbents in tough races eager to get back home to campaign.
The Senate had been scheduled to be in session until Oct. 26.
Now most lawmakers likely won’t return to Washington until the week after the Nov. 6 election.
The deal is a bigger help to Democrats, who have more members of their conference locked in tough races, but it also helps vulnerable Republicans, such as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
But, while Senate Democrats may be happy with the deal, it has infuriated left-wing activist groups that feel that the Democrat Party did not do enough to stop Trump from confirming Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Also according to The Hill:
But progressives immediately argued the agreement was too soon after Democrats lost their uphill bid to block Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination.
Chris Kang, the counsel for Demand Justice, blasted Democrats as “passive” and warned that progressives were “not going to tolerate this kind of weakness much longer.”
“This deal was totally unnecessary and it is a bitter pill to swallow so soon after the Kavanaugh fight that so many progressive activists poured their hearts and souls into. This period will be long remembered not just for the historic number of judges Trump has been able to confirm, but also because of how passive Democrats were in response,” he said.
You have to give it to Mitch McConnell.
Like him or hate him, as a Republican you have to hand it to him for getting so many of Donald Trump’s judges placed firmly on the bench in court rooms all across the country.
Donald Trump has confirmed more judges to the bench in his first term than any president in history and he is remaking the courts in a way that will last several generations.
So, mad props to McConnell for his work on judges.
