Honestly, I know that some of our Trump supporting readers won’t like this post, but I’m just not sure there is anything I can do about that. I have been openly supporting Senator [score]Ted Cruz[/score] (R-TX) for President for quite some time now and I am trying to maintain objectivity here, but any way I slice this race – Senator Cruz is just a better candidate for me and the things I value. I’m not upset with Mr. Trump or his supporters — I get why they like him — but I don’t understand why some continue to pretend that he is a “conservative.”
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough has been openly supporting Mr. Trump throughout most of this primary campaign and during Friday’s episode of Morning Joe, Scarborough articulated once again, something I have been saying since last spring (see here and here).
Joe Scarborough: [Trump] is going back to what he has always been. We have said on this air nonstop. He is a Democrat. He is a centrist Democrat. Who gave money to Democrats for years. He has never been a conservative. That’s not been a secret to anybody. And yet he has blown the doors off every Republican primary.
And when he goes into the general election, it is going to be harder for Democrats to say he has been a right wing religious fanatic who is going to keep you away from abortion, and keep you away from same-sex…
Trending: Liberal Propaganda & the War on Truth
It doesn’t make it right or wrong, it makes it harder for Democrats.
I agree with Scarborough that Mr. Trump is most openly NOT a social conservative. He’s fine with gay marriage, he’s fine with “genderless” bathrooms, he’s fine with Planned Parenthood, and he’s sided with liberals against religious liberty. However, I’d also argue that he’s been quite liberal on fiscal policy as well. He wants to raise taxes on the wealthy, he’s a trade protectionist, he’s anti-free trade, and he currently supports a Medicaid expansion to ensure that every American has healthcare (and he promises that the government will pay for those who can’t afford it).
I wholeheartedly support my Republican friends who support Mr. Trump’s candidacy, but I’d really like them to stop pretending that he is a “conservative,” because he’s just not.
