Louisiana Superintendent: ‘Student Athletes Required to Stand for the Anthem’

Not all heroes wear capes. In fact, ours wear combat boots and many come home draped with an American flag. That is why we stand.

The boneheads in the NFL can’t seem to get that through their thick skull, but it is not hard for the average American to realize and respect our soldiers, veterans, and flag. This is the greatest country on earth, after all.

NFL players may not be required by the league to stand for the national anthem (yet) but one superintendent  in Louisiana says that the student athletes will stand or they will not play. Some may say that this is in violation of their 1st amendment rights, but it isn’t. The sports are extracurricular and it they choose to participate in them, then they also choose to follow the rules.

Student athletes at Bossier Parish Schools in Louisiana are required to stand for the national anthem, Superintendent Scott Smith decided.

Smith explained that the sports teams are voluntary extracurricular activities subject to rules, and if students do not wish to obey them, “they simply don’t have to be a part of that organization.”

Smith said, “Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that actually requiring our student athletes to stand for something so reverent as our national anthem would be a national issue.”

He continued, “It’s almost saddening. We have many veterans that live in our community.”

Smith added, “If they felt that whizzing of that bullet by their head, if they saw their family members come in without an arm or a limb, I think they may be singing a different tune, and it may sound a lot like the national anthem.”

I think this superintendent is on to something, and every school official in the nation should follow suit!
