A lesbian couple in San Diego, California is suing a local Christian school for refusing to educate their five-year old child. The problem? The child’s “mothers” are living in a lesbian relationship, something that the school prohibits.
Mt. Erie Christian Academy is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinct Christian environment, and it believes that its biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ like. On those occasions in which the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle that the school teaches, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school (Leviticus 20:13a; Romans 1:21-27; Matthew 19:4-6; I Corinthians 6:9-20).
The women now say that they had no idea about the school’s policy, which seems like a stretch considering the explicit nature with which the policy is outlined in the handbook.
“If we knew from the beginning that this was unacceptable, they didn’t condone or believe in this, if it was such a big deal, we would have never started her off there. I would never put my child’s emotional wellbeing in an unstable setting like that.”
The two women enrolled their child at Mt. Erie Christian Academy over the summer and apparently filled out all of the appropriate paperwork but failed to actually read the paperwork or the handbook that they were given. When the school found out that the little girl had “two mommies,” they called the women in for a meeting and notified that the school would no longer allow their child to attend.
A local attorney likened the school’s refusal to enroll the child to human sacrifice or limb removal. (I kid you not.)
San Diego attorney Eugene Iredale said both California and federal cases have upheld the right of private institutions to bar membership based on religious beliefs. That is exactly the opposite of discrimination laws that pertain to publicly-funded programs and businesses that cater to the general public. “Now the question is where do you draw the line?” Iredale asked. “If you have a religion that believed in human sacrifice or amputation of the arm or the hand for theft, would we permit that in the interest of permitting the free practice of one’s religion? I don’t think so, and one could argue that psychologically… this is as devastating to the little 5-year-old girl as some of those other vicious practices.”
Of course, Mt. Erie is now facing incredible backlash from the liberal gay lobby and their school’s reputation has been damaged. On their Facebook page they asked for support from their local community and the families who send their children to the school.
Hello Mt. Erie family! We have been informed that today Channel 10 news will be airing a story about a Biblical decision that the School board made regarding our admissions policy. We stand firmly behind our board’s decision and ask that you support us through this time. We may receive some backlash from those who do not respect our Biblical perspective, however we will continue to provide a Christian education. It’s more concerning that we have invited Channel 10 news out to cover so many of the events and programs that we have for the community however they have never shown any interest, but the first opportunity they get to talk about controversy they are willing to spend significant resources to convince you that the church must conform to the world’s beliefs and disregard our own. Show your loving support for Mt. Erie Christian Academy by posting a positive review about our school on google or Channel 10 news.
As the left continues its assault on religious liberty, it seems that no one is safe from attack. Mt. Erie is a Christian school that outlined its philosophy, beliefs, rules and expectations in advance and makes that material readily available to everyone. They don’t take any money from the federal government and they identify themselves as a particularly religious institution… but none of that matters to the left. They gay lobby machine is now revving its engine with the hopes of destroying a small Christian school and dealing damage to other Christian institutions in California and the rest of America.
If a group of Christians cannot congregate together as a body of religious people around their own particular beliefs because they may offend a homosexual… then what good is the 1st Amendment?
