John Stossel Ranks the Presidential Candidates

Fox Business host and possibly America’s most famous Libertarian, John Stossel, recently produced a list for Reason online that enumerated his list of Presidential candidates from best to worst. I think that Eagle Rising readers will find a lot to like and dislike in his list, but I thought it’d be interesting to see what y’all thought about what Stossel had to say.

Stossel chose his list of presidential candidates on how much they want to micro-manage our lives, or involve us in dubious foreign wars. Those who recognize the harm done by state control and government overreach gain points.

Stossel’s top ten looked like this:

Rand Paul (R-KY)

Trending: Government Forces Churches To Perform Gay Marriage

Gary Johnson (Libertarian)

Carly Fiorina (R-CA)

Jeb Bush (R-FL)

Ted Cruz (R-TX)

Scott Walker (R-WI)

Rick Perry (R-TC)

Marco Rubio (R-FL)

John Kasich (R-OH)

Ben Carson (R)

Stossel’s bottom five look like this:

Bernie Sanders (D/I-VT)

Joe Biden (D-DE)

Hillary Clinton (D-NY)

Mike Huckabee (R-AR)

Jill Stein (Green)

You can see his whole list at

He also arbitrarily gave and took points away from candidates depending on the level of their hostility towards libertarianism (which explains Huckabee’s low ranking). I obviously disagree with much of Stossel’s list, though I consider myself a libertarian-leaning conservative.

Now, based on my own criteria, I’ll give you my current list of favorite to least favorite. I am choosing these based on my perception of their conservative consistency, and I’ve leaned on the conservative thinkers over at Heritage for help. (Heritage does a great job of ranking our lawmakers by their voting record – so if a candidate says their conservative but votes like a liberal, Heritage unmasks them and doesn’t let them get away with their lies.)

So here goes (unless otherwise indicated the candidate is a Republican):

  1. Ted Cruz
  2. Rand Paul
  3. Marco Rubio
  4. Scott Walker
  5. Carly Fiorina
  6. Bobby Jindal
  7. Rick Perry
  8. Mike Huckabee
  9. Ben Carson
  10. Jeb Bush
  11. Donald Trump
  12. Gary Johnson (Libertarian)
  13. Jim Gilmore
  14. Rick Santorum
  15. Chris Christie
  16. John Kasich
  17. Lindsey Graham
  18. Jim Webb (D-VA, the first Democrat and I couldn’t vote for him…)
  19. George Pataki
  20. Lincoln Chafee (D-RI)
  21. Hillary Clinton (D-NY, completely immoral and terrible)
  22. Joe Biden (D-DE)
  23. Martin O’Malley (D-MD)
  24. Bernie Sanders (D/I-VT)
  25. Jill Stein (Green)

It should go without saying that I could never vote for the bottom tier of candidates here, but I was trying to list them from my favorite to least favorite.

I know that many of you will disagree with my list and I hope you’ll comment and set me straight… but please be nice about it.
