Jeb Bush Thinks NSA Spying on Americans is Totally Cool and Very Important

I’m sorry. The headline may be a bit biased. I’ve written time and time again against the NSA spying programs on this site… and I’m not going to back down any time soon. The NSA programs that sweep up our private electronic communications are unconstitutional and unnecessary, and I will oppose anyone who supports them — Democrat or Republican.

Here’s what Jeb Bush said on Wednesday about his support for the NSA and the programs they’ve run to spy on innocent American citizens.

That requires responsible intelligence gathering and analysis, including the NSA metadata program which contributes to awareness of potential terror cells and interdiction efforts on a global scale.

For the life of me, I don’t understand the debate has gotten off track, where we’re not understanding and protecting — we do protect our civil liberties. But this is a hugely important program to use these technologies to keep us safe…

Here’s the thing… I’m all for our government working to keep us safe, so long as it is within the constricting power of the Constitution – meaning, the government must respect my liberty, my property and my privacy. The NSA spying programs are blatant attacks on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Amendments and could be used (as the IRS has proven already) against our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights.

The government simply needs to find a better way to fight terrorism than by sweeping up everyone’s personal electronic data. Yes, it makes their job more difficult, but that is the price of freedom. Safety does not trump liberty – in fact, the Constitution was written to ensure that NOTHING trumped individual liberty… not safety, not equality, not prosperity… Nothing.

Please don’t join Jeb Bush in giving away some of our freedom in the vain hope of making us a little safer. Don’t we all already know what Benjamin Franklin said about that?

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.   — Benjamin Franklin 11/11/1755
