Illegal Immigration is Destroying a Generation of Children

The Obama administration’s reticence to do anything about the tsunami of illegal immigrants crashing against our southern border is creating a humanitarian disaster of epic proportions. Think Hurricane Katrina, Kosovo, Rwanda, Somali Pirates… thousands of people may very well die because our President and the Democrat Party are playing politics.

A recent Gallup poll tells us that illegal immigration is the most important issue concerning Americans today… but…

The President and his administration have decided to take a “relaxed” approach to the illegal immigration issue, thereby creating the misconception that it is now legal for people to enter the country without taking the proper legal steps first. For years, illegal immigrant parents have travelled here just in time for the birth of their children – giving rise to the term “anchor babies” and providing a credible path to living in America without fear of deportation. At least in “anchor baby” situations the parents travelled here with their children. In Obama’s America, the children are sent here alone and unprotected, and it is creating the perfect storm for the most disgusting humanitarian crisis the Western Hemisphere has seen since the American slave trade was legal.

Homeland Security Chief Jeh Johnson recently testified before Congress on the issue.  What he had to say was disheartening, to say the least.

“I’ve met with enough of these kids now, including a 15-year-old in Nogales two weeks ago, who was three months pregnant, to have a real sense for what these kids go through,” Johnson told Congress. “We’ve heard about how before they leave Central America, some of these kids’ parents actually will give them birth control in case they’re raped along the way.”

illegal-immigrant-children1Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) who blames Republicans for inaction, but whose Party really carries most of the blame because of their lack of desire to do anything about illegal immigration chimed in, “When they initially arrived in the United States, they were very quiet and they didn’t open up,” said Durbin of a pair of immigrant siblings named Samuel and Emily. “They were clearly victims of trauma. After two months of care and custody of these 3- and 6-year-old children by HHS, Emily revealed that both children had been raped by members of a local drug cartel.”

Durbin continued: “I think about those children when I think about this debate. Are they the exception? God, I pray they are. But I’m afraid there are many more with similar stories.”

It’s heartbreaking, and worse – it doesn’t have to be happening.

A cohesive and common sense illegal immigration plan would go a long way in helping to solve the problems we are now facing.

An even better fix would be for us to reform our welfare system so that illegal immigrants aren’t encouraged by our own welfare policies to come here illegally. Secondly, ending “the war on drugs” would help to end the stranglehold of drug cartels on the governments of our neighbors to the south. These two measures coupled together would virtually end illegal immigration from Latin America by eliminating the benefits of sneaking into the USA.

But I’m not holding my breath waiting for these things to happen…

Sadly, even when these illegal immigrant children arrive here they remain in great jeopardy.

Our federal government has become “overwhelmed” by the sheer numbers of illegal immigrants arriving on our shores and can no longer handle the load in a reasonable amount of time. The children may end up suffering the most because of the utter volume of illegal immigrants who are arriving.

“Overwhelmed” Feds Putting Kids in Dangerous Homes

One nonprofit estimated as many as 10 percent of the children are being sent to live in unacceptable or dangerous conditions. Given the numbers crossing the border, that could translate into thousands of children eventually having to be rescued by local child services agencies.

“There’s such a large pressure on social workers to reunify children quickly, and [while] the protocols of what background checks a sponsor has to go through [have] been reduced, the number of home visits has [also] been reduced,” said Caitlin Sanderson, program director at the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project.

Things have gotten so bad that criminals from human trafficking organizations are even risking kidnapping children directly from the government. A recent story in the National Review Online discussed attempts by these groups to have children placed with them by the government. The government is currently overwhelmed and cannot properly vet the homes they are placing children in, and there is very real concern that some kids are slipping between the cracks and being handed over to human traffickers (or at the least being placed in homes where they are not properly cared for).

In Mexico, smugglers, coyotes, human traffickers and all sorts of other human detritus are operating in the open, thanks to the lawless nature of northern Mexico.

Smugglers are operating in plain view and during the day along the Mexican side of the Rio Grande across the border from Roma.

A CHANNEL 5 NEWS crew watched as the smugglers blew up rafts, took payments and sent men floating across the river.

The smugglers threatened the news crews.

Dozen of vehicles circled the river bank on the Mexican side all day. Many of the vehicles had Texas license plates.

I’m a conservative. I am against illegal immigration, but not because I’m a racist, a xenophobe or jingoistic. I think that illegal immigration can (and does) breed lawlessness and injustice. I think that illegal immigration is causing great pain and suffering in our world today. We have to make it stop. I believe that the lives of these children (and adults) who are taking part in this wave of illegal immigration are sacred and the risks they are taking to get here far too extreme. We must end the perverse incentives that drive them to risk so much to get here. We must dismantle the welfare system that rewards them for wrongdoing and coerces them to send their children through a gauntlet of danger for some slim hope of reaching our shores.

Deporting illegal immigrants and prosecuting and criminalizing illegal immigration is the caring thing for us to do — not only for American citizens, but also for the very people who risk so much to get here. The lives of their children should be sacred – we must stop this great humanitarian crisis.

End illegal immigration, NOW.
