In another case of government harassment, French prosecutors are charging Marine Le Pen for tweeting images of Jihadist violence.
Charging Marine Le Pen isn’t just the decision of the prosecutors. First, the French parliament had to strip her of her immunity from such charges. France has no First Amendment but they realize that they can’t operate as a democracy if political candidates have to fear prosecution when making their case to voters. Nevertheless, for the populist Right, Parliament has made it clear that there is no freedom.
This is an act of desperation by an establishment that is on it’s way out of power. Marine Le Pen’s niece spoke at CPAC, much to the disliking of our own establishment.
The Associated Press reports, “French far-right leader Marine Le Pen charged over IS photos.”
Le Pen’s December 2015 tweets showed executions by IS extremists, including the killing of American reporter James Foley. She posted them in the wake of the November 2015 IS attacks on Paris, accusing the government of not doing enough to protect France.
Le Pen told BFM television Thursday “it’s clearly aimed at silencing me. Yet I will not be silenced”. Le Pen said she would consider a potential conviction as a “medal of patriotism and defense of the French people.”
The preliminary charges were made possible after the French parliament lifted her immunity from prosecution in the case late last year.
