Duck Dynasty Civil War? A Family Divided by the GOP Presidential Race!

There’s a rough and tumble brawl breaking out down in Louisiana as America’s favorite reality TV family (and no, it’s not the Kardashians) have decided to split their vote for president.

A couple of weeks back the patriarch of the Robertson family, Phil Robertson, openly endorsed Senator [score]Ted Cruz[/score] (R-TX) as his candidate for President.

“My qualifications for President of the United States are rather narrow: Is he or she Godly, does he or she love us, can he or she do the job, and finally would they kill a duck and put him in a pot and make him a good duck gumbo?,” Robertson said. “[Cruz] fits the bill.”

You might have noticed in the ad that near the end there, Phil seems to tell the Senator that he has the support of the entire Robertson family. “Cruz the reason we’re going to vote for you, all of us, is because you‘re one of us, my man.”

Sadly, it doesn’t seem that the Robertson Family was as unified on the political front as Phil thought because just a few days later, Phil’s son and CEO of the family business, Duck Commander (and Buck Commander) endorsed Donald Trump as his candidate.

“Mr. Trump is a real leader. He represents success and strength, two attributes our country needs. Like me, he is a successful businessman and family man and I endorse his candidacy for president of the United States.” – Willie Robertson(CEO of Duck Commander)

So, what does this all mean?! Has the Robertson family camaraderie collapsed? Is this the end of the unity in America’s favorite family of hunters? Not so fast. It seems that all is well in the Robertson household; father and son just hold differing views on who should be the next President.

The two men appeared on Fox News’ Hannity Show to discuss the family rift and explained that the schism really isn’t that big of a deal.

Here’s what Phil and Willie had to say about why they chose the candidates that they did.

Sean Hannity: All right, so let’s talk about the split because, to be honest, this is clearly between the two of these men. If you look at some polls, they’ve got 60-plus percent of the vote! So your family is representative of where a lot of people are.

Phil, you’re the patriarch of the family. I’ll ask you. Why Ted?

Phil Robertson: The writer of our Constitution, James Madison, said this Constitution was written for a moral and religious people. It’s wholly inadequate for any other. So I just looked at Cruz. He stood out in my mind as being a moral and religious man. I thought to myself, Good enough for me. It’s about that simple on my part.

Willie, he’s a grown man. He can vote for who he wants to. You know what I’m saying?

Sean Hannity: Understood. And you taught him to be himself. Willie, why Trump?

Willie Robertson: Well, I think since that was written, I think now our system is — honestly, I think it’s broken, and I think a lot of the politicians are just more of the same, and I want somebody in there who can shake it up, who can change it up, who are not after the money, and you know, after people telling them what to say. And I like a man who puts his money where his mouth is and pays for his own thing and he’s not in debt to anybody and says, Hey, I’m going to do what I’m going to do.

I think he’s the man for the job. He’s run a business, and I think, you know, so many of these people come in, they’ve never run a business. They don’t know what they’re doing when they get there. And I just like somebody who’s run a business, especially New York City. I think that’s an advantage. I think you couldn’t be that successful in New York City without having to be able to work with different kinds of people, and I think he’s done that, and I think he will actually work with other people.

It’s kind of anti-climactic, isn’t it? This is how differences of opinion should be handled – with grace, mercy and understanding. Even though Duck Dynasty is no longer the ratings dynamo that it once was, the Robertson family is proving that America still has a lot to learn from them.
