‘Dollar Store Grandpa Bandit’ Lands on FBI Wanted List

Have you ever seen the movie Bad Grandpa? Well I now present the real life version: “Dollar Store Grandpa Bandit.”

A senior whom police believe to be between the age of 50 and 60 earned his nickname after he began hitting Dollar Stores in December of 2016. The FBI is asking the public for help with his identity.

The older man has committed at least 9 armed armed robberies in the last 7 months in a cross-country spree that has hit from New York to Idaho. He appears to be getting around in his silver-ish gray Dodge Charger that dons a rear spoiler. Grandpa seems to be burglarizing in style.

In each incident, the suspect enters the establishment around closing time, displays a weapon, directs employees to remove cash from the registers and store safe, forces employees into the back rooms, and then takes their cell phones to prevent them from calling the police.

The employees’ phones are then discarded by the suspect some distance away, usually in a neighboring town. In addition to displaying a handgun, the suspect has also displayed a stun-gun type weapon and pepper spray.

Pops has been described as a White male with light, neatly trimmed hair and a mustache, who is roughly 5’10 to 6’0 tall and weighs about 200 pounds.

Due to his seeming obsession with the specific store, officials believe he may be a disgruntled former employee. Police Chief Robert Durivage of North Greenbush stated, “It is possible that he has firsthand knowledge of the operations of Dollar Tree stores which account for seven of the eight he is known to have robbed, the suspect may have worked for or may have had an unresolved dispute with the company.”

The North Greenbush Police Department shared a post on Facebook with a tip line:

A TIPS Line has been established for the public to call with any leads. Anyone with information that can lead to the suspect’s identity and/or whereabouts are asked to call the TIPS line at – Will provide this number as soon as we receive from the FBI. In the Interim, call North Greenbush Police at (518) 283-5323.
