‘I’ve Been Black All My Life. You Don’t Have To Tell Me How To Be Black.’

— Condoleezza Rice

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been making the rounds on the political talk show circuit in recent days, publicizing her new book, Political Risk: How Businesses and Organizations Can Anticipate Global Insecurity.

Earlier this week, she stopped by Fox News to speak with Maria Bartiromo about the book and about the state of affairs in our nation today.

Bartiromo led off the interview with asking about the hottest topic in recent weeks – Kanye West. Bartiromo wanted to know what Rice thought about what was happening to West, as a woman of color with a conservative lean in her political beliefs. Rice mentioned that she’s faced similar criticism throughout her life and she had come to realize that “the height of prejudice is to look at somebody and think you know what they think because of the color of their skin.”

Here’s what she said of the criticism Kanye has been facing:

“Well, my view of it — first of all, I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it, but I can say that people should be able to express their views. Not all of us have to think politically the same way. I’ve said to people sometimes, ‘I’ve been black all my life. You don’t have to tell me how to be black.’ So I think we need to recognize that in some ways the height of prejudice is to look at somebody and think you know what they think because of the color of their skin. And so I hope we get to the point where people get to express their views and you can agree with them or disagree with them that, after all, is what it means to be an American is to have the ability to say what you think…”
