BREAKING: Attorney General Jeff Sessions Has Just Resigned

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has submitted his resignation.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has submitted his resignation on the same day that President Donald Trump noted that if the Democrat Party is going to turn its newly won majority in the House of Representatives into a weapon to go to war against him, that he will return the favor and investigate them for leaks and other crimes.

It appears that Sessions knew immediately that he could not be the sort of proactive AG that Trump would need going forward and so he has resigned from the post.

Indeed, many conservatives have complained bitterly that Sessions has been too lackadaisical in the role and not active enough to investigate the Democrats’ crimes perpetrated under the Obama regime.

Sessions immediately raised eyebrows before he even started his position as AG, angering both his boss and his constituents by recusing himself from having anything to do with Hillary Clinton’s crimes and Robert Mueller’s fake “Russia collusion” investigation.

Immediately upon his announcement, though, Trump attacked Sessions for abandoning his boss before the chips even started falling.

Trump slammed Sessions saying, “I put in an attorney general that never took control of the Justice Department. It’s sort of an incredible thing.”

“Jeff Sessions recused himself, which he shouldn’t have done, or he should have told me,” Trump said. “He took my job, and then he said, ‘I’m going to recuse myself.’ I said, ‘What kind of man is this?'”

Indeed, in other comments, Trump noted he would not even have hired Sessions if he knew ahead of time that Sessions would back out of being any help before even taking the job.

But, Sessions defended himself at the time saying, “I took control of the Department of Justice the day I was sworn in, which is why we have had unprecedented success at effectuating the President’s agenda-one that protects the safety and security and rights of the American people, reduces violent crime, enforces our immigration laws, promotes economic growth, and advances religious liberty.”

Still, Sessions continued to take criticism for being so low energy in the office. Conservatives have grumbled about the AG since he took the office. It now looks like Trump will have the opportunity to find the tough guy that he needs going forward.

Here is the full text of the resignation letter:

Dear Mr. President,

At your request, I am submitting my resignation.

Since the day I was honored to be sworn in as Attorney General of the United States, I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country. I have done so to the best of my ability, working to support the fundamental legal processes that are the foundation of justice.

The team we assembled embraced your directive to be a law and order Department of Justice. We prosecuted the largest number of violent offenders and firearm defendants in our country’s history. We took on transnational gangs that are bringing violence and death across our borders and protected national security. We did our part to restore immigration enforcement. We targeted the opioid epidemic by prosecuting doctors, pharmacists, and anyone else who contributes to this crisis with new law enforcement tools and determination. And we have seen results. After two years of rising violent crime and homicides prior to this administration, those trends have reversed—thanks to the hard work of our prosecutors and law enforcement around the country.

I am particularly grateful to the fabulous men and women in law enforcement all over this country with whom I have served. I have had no greater honor than to serve alongside them. As I have said many times, they have my thanks and I will always have their backs.

Most importantly, in my time as Attorney General we have restored and upheld the rule of law—a glorious tradition that each of us has a responsibility to safeguard. We have operated with integrity and have lawfully and aggressively advanced the policy agenda of this administration.

I have been honored to serve as Attorney General and have worked to implement the law enforcement agenda based on the rule of law that formed a central part of your campaign for the Presidency.

Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. President.

Jefferson B. Sessions III
Attorney General
