Boko Haram Pledges Allegiance to ISIS

Hey President Obama, how’s that war on terror progressing?

The Obama administration has been quick to tell anyone who’s been listening that the war on terror is going well. We’re supposedly pushing back the ISIS terrorists, and in general dealing damage to terrorists around the world. The problem is… it’s just really hard to SEE any of this progress.

For example, ISIS has spread from Syria and Iraq to Libya (where they are the de facto rulers of the North African nation), Algeria, Yemen (where they are competing with Al Qaeda for power) and now… in Nigeria.

Maybe you remember the other terrifying terrorists who reside in Northeastern Nigeria? They call themselves Boko Haram, and they are adept at kidnapping little girls and murdering unarmed innocent civilians. (Of course, when they face the Nigerian army, the Boko Haram cowards seem strikingly quick to flee. Apparently they only like to fight when the opponent is unarmed.)

Well, Boko Haram made a scary announcement on their social media pages over the weekend.

boko haramThe most powerful branch of Boko Haram, led by an evil villain named Abubakar Shakau, has decided to pledge their allegiance to ISIS and their leader Abu Bakr al–Baghdadi, who calls himself the caliph of ISIS. Here’s the message they posted on their Twitter feed this weekend –

“We announce our allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims … and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity, in hardship and ease, and to endure being discriminated against, and not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of evident infidelity regarding that which there is a proof from Allah.”

Boko Haram had already signaled that they were building ties with ISIS. Several months ago they declared their own caliphate in northeastern Nigeria. Their Internet activity has also become more professional and well produced. Observers took both events as signs that they’d begun working more closely with ISIS.

The group has recently become even more violent, killing many in Northeastern Nigeria as the military forces of a multi-national force closed the noose on the Muslim terrorists. The President of Chad, Idris Deby, made his own pronouncement over the weekend telling Shakau that his military knows where Boko Haram (and Shakau) are hiding, and that if they do not surrender now, they will all be killed.

The two announcements (along with Boko Haram’s uptick in activity) being made so close together is likely not a coincidence. This may be a last ditch effort by Boko Haram to swell their numbers as they anticipate a coming battle against the military. Perhaps we can be optimistic and hope that Boko Haram’s decision to pledge their fealty to ISIS is an act of desperation as they begin to realize that they may soon be facing their destruction.
