Best News Ever? Abortion Clinics Closing at Record Rate

In what is probably the best news I’ve heard in a while, Bloomberg is reporting that abortion clinics across America have been closing at a record pace in recent days. While the reporting from Bloomberg sounds downright despondent about the fact that thousands of children’s lives have been spared, they do manage to give us some of the basic facts.

Abortion access in the U.S. has been vanishing at the fastest annual pace on record, propelled by Republican state lawmakers’ push to legislate the industry out of existence. Since 2011, at least 162 abortion providers have shut or stopped offering the procedure, while just 21 opened…

The drop-off in providers—more than one every two weeks—occurred in 35 states, in both small towns and big cities that are home to more than 30 million women of reproductive age…

This radical shift has, in my opinion, happened largely because of the political revolution taking place at the state level across the nation. While Republicans have been losing national elections (and losing badly) over the last decade or so, we have been winning local and state elections at a historic rate. Republicans so dominate the stage at the local level that the Democrats have almost no hope of taking back the House for the foreseeable future. This shift in local politics has made it possible for the GOP to use make the practice of murdering babies far more difficult than it was in previous decades.

sanctity-of-life-abortionRead though how Bloomberg describes the actions taken by certain states against professional baby-killers (emphasis mine):

Bloomberg’s reporting shows that the downward trend has accelerated to the fastest annual pace on record since 2011, with 31 having closed or stopped performing the procedure each year on average.

State regulations that make it too expensive or logistically impossible for facilities to remain in business drove more than a quarter of the closings. Industry consolidation, changing demographics, and declining demand were also behind the drop, along with doctor retirements and crackdowns on unfit providers.

Bloomberg goes on to site Texas as the worst offender and perfect case study for why the abortion mills are closing down. However, the onerous regulations that Texas has forced upon the industry don’t seem all that tough when you actually read them (and what happened here – I thought liberals LOVED regulating industries):

The legislation, House Bill 2 (HB2), requires abortion facilities to meet the same safety standards of other Ambulatory Surgical Centers in the state, ensures that abortionists have admitting privileges at a local hospital, and bans painful late abortions on fully formed babies.

The part of the bill that has driven abortion clinics in Texas out of business is the requirement that an abortion clinic (where surgeries are performed) maintain the same safety standards as other surgical centers (how horrible), and the need for the doctors at the clinic to have admitting privileges at a local hospital (which is a basic requirement for other doctors working in the gynecological field). The truth is that these requirements aren’t onerous — they make perfect sense — but the abortion industry isn’t interested in what makes sense; they’re interested in what makes money. Texas’ laws cut too deeply into their profit to make it worth their while to continue running their abortion mills.

And that’s a good thing. In fact, the faster they close, the better off we all are.
