Senator Al Franken is stepping down amid sexual harassment allegations. With the mountain of accusers, photos, and flat out proof, he knew there was not really a way out of this other than the resignation being demanded by many people.
About two weeks ago in early December, Franken announced his resignation, yet tried to somehow blame Trump for his wrong doings.
“I know in my heart that nothing I have done as a senator, nothing, has brought dishonor on this institution, and I am confident that the Ethics Committee would agree,” he said, “Nevertheless, today I am announcing that in the coming weeks, I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate.”
Franken added that he was “leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office.”
While we have all been waiting to see if the Minnesota Democrat would follow through with his resignation, a spokesman for the senator said that he will be leaving his seat on January 2nd.
The many allegations against Franken led to Senate Democrats calling for his resignation as well as the Senate Ethics Committee launching a probe into the allegations last month.
However, some Democrats have recently expressed regret for calling Franken to resign without waiting for “due process” to play out.
Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy said, “I have stood for due process throughout my years as a prosecutor and in chairing the Judiciary Committee.”
He continued, “I regret not doing that this time. The Ethics Committee should have been allowed to investigate and make its recommendation.”
There a slight difference in Trump and all these other people resigning: there is solid proof against them and they admit that they did something wrong. However, our president maintains his innocence and many of his accusers have been proven to be lying!
