In an interview with his cult-like follower and New York Times writer, Thomas Friedman, President Obama opines about issues across the globe and hits at the biggest threat to our nation today… conservatives.
At the end of the day, the president mused, the biggest threat to America — the only force that can really weaken us — is us. We have so many things going for us right now as a country — from new energy resources to innovation to a growing economy — but, he said, we will never realize our full potential unless our two parties adopt the same outlook that we’re asking of Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds or Israelis and Palestinians: No victor, no vanquished and work together.
“Our politics are dysfunctional,” said the president, and we should heed the terrible divisions in the Middle East as a “warning to us: societies don’t work if political factions take maximalist positions. And the more diverse the country is, the less it can afford to take maximalist positions.”
While he blamed the rise of the Republican far right for extinguishing so many potential compromises, Obama also acknowledged that gerrymandering, the Balkanization of the news media and uncontrolled money in politics — the guts of our political system today — are sapping our ability to face big challenges together, more than any foreign enemy. “Increasingly politicians are rewarded for taking the most extreme maximalist positions,” he said, “and sooner or later, that catches up with you.”
He blames the far-right and the Republican Party in general for the dysfunction that can be found in Washington, D.C., but perhaps his lens of observation should be focused more inward. The Daily Caller reminds us of one instance where Mr. Obama seemed to take his own maximalist position, “For example, in October 2013, during the dispute over the 2014 budget, Obama used one speech to describe Republican legislators in the House as akin to arsonists, kidnappers, deadbeats, butchers, lunatics and extortionists, obsessives, out-of-touch hostage-takers, nuclear-armed bombers, and unserious irresponsible extremists.”
President Obama is no moderate and the Democrat Party is not one populated by moderates. Using a fellow liberals own metric, President Obama is at best as liberal as the average Democrat. And the average Democrat is no moderate. In Congress, the only socialist in government, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), caucses with the Democrats. Politicians like Ron Wyden, Mark Udall, Elizabeth Warren and many others are mainstream Democrats who should be considered extreme left Democrats.
The truth is the President is wrong (again). We conservatives are not a problem for the nation, and we are hardly a danger. The truth is that continuing the failed liberal policies of the last 25 years is the greatest danger our nation faces. We continue to pour money down the same holes expecting a different result and that is the very definition of insanity.
