North Carolina Republican Paul Stam (R-Wake County) made an interesting point while the state legislatures debated a proposal to prevent charter schools from discriminating against applicants based on their sexual orientation.
The amendment brought by Democrat Susan Fisher (D-Buncombe) would “prohibit a charter school from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
But for Mr. Stam the language of the amendment was too vague.
Stam handed out a sheet listing what he said were 30 different sexual orientations. He argued the definition of sexual orientation must be narrowed, otherwise it would include masochism, sadism, pedophilia, along with homosexuality and heterosexuality.
“Sexual orientation is not defined anywhere,” he said. “Many, many sexual orientations are not the ones you want to have teaching kids in schools,” he said. “You may think you know what you mean by this but you don’t.”
Democrats were quick to get angry and offended.
Democrat Marcus Brandon (D-Guilford) responded that pedophilia is not a sexual orientation like homosexuality.
“It’s offensive. Pedophilia is not a sexuality, it is a disease. It is a problem that has to be addressed outside of this body.”
The AP points out that according to the American Psychological Association (APA), sexual orientation “refers to an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to men, women, or both sexes,” as well as referring to a person’s “sense of identity.” The APA also makes this note about pedophilia, “pedophilia is a mental disorder; that sex between adults and children is always wrong; and that acting on pedophilic impulses is and should be a criminal act.”
To Democrats and the media this seems to be definitive proof that Democrats are right and Mr. Stam is wrong. Sadly, that’s just not the case. It wasn’t all that long ago that the APA also referred to homosexuality as a mental disorder (up until 1974), and the lusts of homosexuality were always considered wrong.
But apparently Democrats have short memories.
Also, notice how the APA describes sexual orientation – “refers to an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions…” it seems to me that a pedophile could very easily argue from this part of their definition that pedophilia is indeed a “sexual orientation.”
I think that Mr. Stam’s statement was right on, and North Carolina Democrats know it. They just don’t care. Now Rep. Stam will be painted as some kind of fringe lunatic, but the truth of the matter is he is right on the money and North Carolina’s children will suffer for their parents not listening to him.
