A group of Idaho elementary school teachers are in a bit of hot water after photos leaked showing them in a Halloween costume depicting a border wall with “Make American Great Again” spelled out on it.
Photos were posted to the Middleton School District’s Facebook page showing staffers from Middleton Heights Elementary School dressed up in cardboard placards to appear like a wall, Fox News reported.
Josh Middleton, the superintendent of the Middleton School District, addressed the photos in a Facebook Live on Friday. Middleton confirmed the district was investigating the photos. Middleton said he was informed of the photos after he was contacted by a parent who expressed concern over the costumes.
“I was shown photos and troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate,” he said. “I want to say we are better than this.”
The border wall get-up was made during a team building activity for the teachers and staff, according to reports.
The superintendent added that he did not believe that the teachers meant the costume in a malicious manner, but added that it was poor judgment.
According to KTVB TV, only about 9.5 percent of the city’s population is Hispanic.
The superintendent added that he sees the incident as a time to “learn from this.”
