When Did the Democrat Party Formally Turn Into the Party of Open Borders?

The exact date is not clear as Democrat Party leaders of the past twenty years have spoken out about the costs of illegal immigration.   In 1993, Harry Reid described the “insanity” of a nation allowing for “birthright citizenship” and rewarding such lawbreakers:

“If making it easy to be an illegal alien isn’t enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant? No sane country would do that, right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship and guarantee of full access to all public and social services that this society provides, and that’s a lot of services.”

Now, anyone who doesn’t welcome this is considered insane, or at least a heartless hater of humanity.

Bill Clinton decried the impact illegal immigrations had on our economy during the 1995 State of the Union when he said:

“All Americans, not only in the States most heavily affected but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country.

The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers.

That’s why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens.

In the budget I will present to you, we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace…”

Today such talk would be enough to have you declared a racist, despite the fact that the group most hurt by the jobs taken by illegals are African American.

More than a decade later, Barack Obama also recognized the impact illegal aliens have on our society declaring,

“Real reform means strong border security, and we can build on the progress my administration has already made — putting more boots on the Southern border than at any time in our history and reducing illegal crossings to their lowest levels in 40 years.

Real reform means establishing a responsible pathway to earned citizenship — a path that includes passing a background check, paying taxes and a meaningful penalty, learning English, and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally.

One can search in vain for a Democrat running for office today willing to say anything negative about reality of illegal immigration.  As a caravan of migrants works its way up Central American and into Mexico, there has been nothing but silence from leading Democrats who seem ok with the idea that those who cross the borders cutting the lines of those who are going through the legal process of becoming citizens.

They seem not only ok, but are now openly campaigning for illegal immigrants as their constituents.  In Georgia, Stacey Abrams, Democrat Nominee for Governor, boasted about the upcoming “Blue Wave” to be ushered in by votes of many groups included “undocumented immigrants”.

In Michigan, illegal immigration has become a critical issue in the race to replace retiring Republican Governor Rick Snyder.  Gretchen Whitmer, the Democrat nominee for governor, has not only refused to speak out against the caravan, she has joined with radical forces within her party calling for the destruction and elimination of the US Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency within our government.  She flat out refuses to rule out support for the transformation of Michigan into a sanctuary state and her running mate is an advocate of both providing drivers licenses and health care for those who enter the country illegally.

Bill Schuette, the Republican running for governor, has pledged to never allow the state to be transformed into a sanctuary for criminal aliens.   He opposes giving illegal aliens drivers licenses and has promised to work with federal officials protect Michigan citizens from the costs of illegal immigration.

Despite the voters of California recalling Democrat Governor Gray Davis in 2003 for signing into law driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, Governor Jerry Brown did it anyway.  Now, we have 8-10 hour waiting lines at the DMV and thousands of illegal aliens “inadvertently” registered to vote through their clever “motor voter” scheme.

Not to be outdone, Democrat Nominee for Governor California, Gavin Newsom, is running on a platform of FREE medical care for illegals, while our state is in financial crisis with businesses and taxpayers leaving because they can’t afford the cost of living or high cost of doing business.  His solution for the state’s economic woes?  Offer more FREE to illegals.

Times have changed.  Just a few years ago, Democrats provided at least lip service to those who wanted America to have secure borders.  Today, they would rather welcome those seeking to enter the US through law breaking rather than through the tradition means of legal immigration.  That is just the sad reality of where the party stands today.
