Cherokee Nation Issues Statement on Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s DNA Test Results: ‘MOCKERY’

The Cherokee Nation responded to the results of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test on Monday, arguing that “a DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship.”

The response came after she revealed that, based on tests, she has Native-American ancestry “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.”

Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. issued the following statement Monday in response to Senator Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test claiming Native Heritage.

“A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America,” Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. “Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.” – Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin, Jr.

Update to this story:

Massachusetts Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren has for decades claimed that she has American Indian heritage, but a new DNA test proves her claim to be laughable.

Warren has claimed that she is a “Cherokee” and has tried to convince people that she has a close ancestor who was Native American. She even parlayed that claim into a lucrative job in the field of education before she became a U.S. Senator.

But the newly revealed DNA test proves that her closest native American relative figures in about 150 years ago or so, making her only 1/1024 (0.098%) Native American. This amount of native bloodline is infinitesimal and does not legally entitle her to get tax breaks or jobs allocated for minorities. Read more.

Newsweek:

After Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren took a DNA test to determine if she had Native American ancestry, a Cherokee Nation official responded, calling such a test “useless.” In a statement, Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said the test was “not evidence for tribal affiliation.”

“A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship,” Hoskin Jr. said. “Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation.”

Hoskin Jr. went on to say that the use of a DNA test was “inappropriate and wrong.”

“Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,” he said. “It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”

Warren wants to be a Cherokee but they don’t want her. Do you think she will respect the Cherokee Nation’s stance? Please comment below and let us know your thoughts.
