Willie Nelson Infuriates Fans for Supporting Texas Liberals, But This Isn’t His First Campaign

Last week country music star Willie Nelson announced that he will headline a fundraiser for left-wing Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke, but contrary to claims, this is not the first time Nelson has campaigned for a politician.

The “Always On My Mind” singer announced on Wednesday that he was siding with the liberal Democrat who recently said that he agrees with protesting against the country during the national anthem.

In August, Democrat Sen. candidate Beto O’Rourke came out in favor of NFL players who protest against the country during the playing of the national anthem. But it is worse than just siding with the idea that petulant, millionaire NFL players have a right to protest against the very country that made them millionaires.

O’Rourke didn’t just agree that NFL players have the right to protest against the nation, he went farther than that and said that “nothing could be more American” than to protest during the national anthem.

O’Rourke made his proclamation at a town hall meeting where he was asked if he thought the protests were disrespectful to the nation.

Daily Wire reported some of the comments unhappy fans have left on social media:

–Goodbye Willie, I don’t support socialist commies! You’re not going to advertise on my FB page either. Like we say in Texas, Now Git!

–I agree, really thought Willie had more sense than this. Of course Beto want to legalize Marijuana! Lol

–Good bye Willie…you are not on the right side.. take a look around you and do the right thing…I always thought you were a patriot…wow what a let down. You would pick a socialist agenda and an Anti American fellow like BETO, shame on you.

–That’s it , I’m done . What a disappointment.

–Willie you just lost over half of your fans by getting involved in politics!! Fan no more!! I cannot believe you support open borders and gun control!! You have smoked too much dope! I guess that is what you and Beta have in common!

–I knew you were a liberal in your personal beliefs. That was obvious, but to each their own. But you had to take it to the public. Just when I thought you were smarter than that…I find you are not…Such a shame to get on the showboat. You just lost some of your I am above it all.

Since all that occurred, media reports began saying that Nelson has never supported any candidate before. But, as Daily Caller reported, that simply isn’t true:

Nelson has performed in support of campaigns for former Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich and former Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis.

Nelson’s publicist clarified that while he has performed on behalf of other candidates in the past, this will be the first time he has held a concert for a candidate in a free, public setting.

“It is a free concert open to the public. Willie has performed for other candidates but at benefit concerts,” Nelson’s publicist told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an email. “The public could buy a ticket but like any other concert it was only open to paid ticket holders.”

News reports reveal at least two Nelson performances in support of campaigns for his “old friend” Kucinich. Tickets sold out for a Kucinich congressional campaign concert fundraiser outside Cleveland in 2012. A Nelson benefit concert for Kucinich’s 2004 presidential campaign “drew a crowd of 4,000 and was expected to raise more than $80,000 for the Kucinich campaign,” according to The Nation.

Nelson also performed at a backyard concert fundraiser for Davis’ 2014 gubernatorial campaign. Her campaign drew scrutiny when it counted the concert as a $250,000 in-kind donation from Nelson, leading to accusations that the campaign had inflated its campaign finance report.

The 85-year-old country singer has publicly supported other candidates in the past. Nelson appeared at a rally for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2006. He briefly endorsed former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee for president in the 2012 election, but he withdrew his endorsement in case Kucinich ran for president again.

So, once again, the media is filled with fake news.
