Can Free Speech on College Campuses be Saved?

The last decade has been a tough one for Universities around the world, but particularly here in the West where the University was once the heart of our civilization, the decline of academia has been painful.

Western Civilization has long relied on our Universities to be centers of learning, but also to be places where our culture could continue progressing towards freedom, peace, and prosperity. Sadly, the Universities have ceased to be the home for developing new ideas for moving our world forward, and instead they’ve become regressive centers of indoctrination meant to entrench the status quo of leftist, neo-Marxist thought.

As this has happened, the Universities have become temple’s of intolerance and ignorance. The people here worship at the altar of homogeneity, and they scandalize any idea of original thought or diversity of belief. This hatred of “the other” has led most of the once elite Universities to outlaw free speech, while canonizing victimhood and the protection of “feelings.”

Our campuses have regressed so far that so-called “de-platforming,” or the refusal to allow a person to speak, has become normalized on campuses across the nation. However, it’s not just the radicals being “de-platformed” (folks like the racist David Duke, or the alt-right fascist Richard Spencer), it’s also speakers with wholly “normal” and “orthodox” views of life, culture, and politics (folks like Ben Shapiro, Bret Weinstein, Jordan Peterson, and Dave Rubin). Speakers from the right, the left, and the middle are being shut down on college campuses, not for espousing radical ideas, but for espousing ideas that are inconsistent with the far-left ideology that has become pervasive on colleges across Western Civilization.

However, in recent days there has been some pushback to the fascist left’s stand against free speech.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently took to the pages of USA Today to explain why we should all be hopeful that free speech is making a comeback on American college campuses.

From USA Today:

Higher education can help promote the free exchange of ideas that is necessary for a functioning Republic.

And while this free exchange is necessary, it is also historically rare and fragile. If we are going to preserve that free exchange of ideas, then the American people must remain vigilant.

Under President Trump’s strong leadership, that’s what the Department of Justice has done. We are vigilant in defending the free speech rights of students across America and we are winning in court…

Under President Trump, we are upholding the constitutional rights of every American student and helping public colleges and universities to fulfill their valuable purpose for society. This graduation season, that’s something that all of us can celebrate.

Sessions gave a handful of specific examples where publicly-funded American colleges had misused their authority to clamp down on free speech, and the Trump Justice Department stepped in to defend the 1st Amendment.

I am grateful that they’ve done so and that the DOJ sees the need to ensure the 1st Amendment is protected, however, I do not share Sessions’ optimism that this will generally lead to a freer college campus. Why? Because the Trump era will eventually come to an end. What happens when the next Democrat President is elected and his Department of Justice suddenly stops caring about defending our free speech rights?

We need a change in culture. The DOJ should be about the business of defending the Constitution from abuse, but so too should every American citizen. We should all be standing up and shouting from our rooftops that the freedom of speech in America is sacrosanct and should be defended at all costs.

Until Americans of all political stripes, tribes, and parties begin defending our constitutional rights from the assault of the neo-Marxist far-left… they will continue to be in danger on the University campus. And if our rights are in danger on the campus, you can be sure that they will, very soon, be in danger out here in the real world.
