When the local news reports that the parents of local school kids are literally in tears about what is happening at that local school… people tend to pay attention.
So hopefully, as terrible as this story is, it will spark interest from public school parents around the nation, who might otherwise think, “well, that could never happen in my school.”
It can happen in your school as parents at Propel Charter School in Hazelwood, Pennsylvania have learned.
Parents of some of the 7th grade students at the Hazelwood location of Propel Charter Schools told local reporters that their children’s science teacher was completely inappropriate during a recent sex ed. lesson.
The parents say that during a routine science class that involved some discussion of sex ed, the science teacher began graphically discussing oral sex… with 7th GRADERS!
One of the students told their mother that “‘We said we didn’t know what it meant, and he told us to look it up, but not on a school computer because they would be able to track it.'” The mom says that this led “a little boy looked it up on his phone, and she (her daughter) saw images and she was traumatized.”
Another parent verified the account of the disturbing class discussion when through tears she told reporters that “My heart is broken. And, right now, I’m angry that this type of person is around our children,”
Another class parent said, “Now I gotta explain things to my child that she may or may not be ready for. But, guess what? She had to find out about it today.” The dad added, “There is no reason for that conversation in a school setting. None.”
Finally, another parent may have best summed up the feelings of frustration and anger that most of the parents were feeling when she said, “I protect her, and then she’s at school where she’s supposed to be protected, and there’s a grown male telling a 13-year-old girl to look it up, and once you see those images you can’t erase those images.”
Parents expect to be forced to protect their children from the obvious dangers in culture, in entertainment, and out in the streets… they don’t expect to have to worry about the teachers who are educating their children
For their part the school system says they have launched a full investigation into the incident.
“To the best of my understanding, in this situation, parents raised some new concerns today with the principal. So, at this point the principal is starting an investigation to determine the truth in the allegations,” Propel Charter Schools spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.
We’ll see what comes of it, but situations like this are becoming terrifyingly more frequent in recent days, and that has to be unsettling for the parents of public school children.
