While Trump is still promising a border wall, he has also shown how much of a difference is made with extra people.

Those National Guard troops who were sent to the border made a big difference. Even though they could not work directly with immigration enforcement, they were able to free up more Customs and Border Protection agents. As a result, there was a huge surge in arrests. The Washington Examiner reports, “Border deployment leads to arrest of 1,600 more illegal immigrants.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have apprehended an additional 1,600 people attempting to illegally enter the country from Mexico since April 15 as a result of the deployment of National Guard troops to the southwest border, CBP and defense officials said Wednesday.

National Guard officials overseeing the border state deployments said troops helping monitor the international boundary have freed up more border agents to physically guard the border. The result has led to a surge in the amount of criminal activity agents have stopped.

The increased surveillance and communication between guardsmen and border officers also led to CBP intercepting an additional 451 people who were turned back before illegally entering the U.S.

Those numbers could tick up considerably if the 4,000 National Guard troops President Trump approved on April 4 are called on in a future request from CBP.

No wonder then that DHS is also requesting additional manpower to help keep the border secure.

ABC News reports, “DHS requesting 700 additional troops, helicopters for border security.

The Department of Homeland Security is asking the Pentagon for additional manpower and equipment to help secure the southern border, U.S. defense and Homeland Security officials tell ABC News.

The defense official said the Department of Homeland Security Wednesday will request about 700 additional National Guardsmen plus helicopters and other equipment. Defense Secretary James Mattis is expected to review the request and respond to DHS on Thursday.

This request is for assistance with Customs and Border Protection missions, like Air and Marine units, but not directly with Border Patrol.

There are currently about 1,600 National Guardsmen serving on the U.S.-Mexico border as part of Trump’s mission. About 2,000 troops have been already approved to take part in the mission. This new request would increase that figure to roughly 2,700.
