The Work of the Future

Have you ever stopped to consider how far the human race has come in the last thousand years or so?

If not, I encourage you to do so. It’s an amazing journey, and we’ve come so far in such a (relatively) short time.

Our forefathers slaved away, working whenever the sun was shining (and sometimes when it wasn’t) just to feed themselves and their families. They worked themselves to the bone, and oftentimes, they died “young.” Consider this, the average life expectancy has more than doubled in just the last 120 years! In 1900, the average world life expectancy was just 31 years old, by 1950 that number had climbed to 48, and today it stands at just over 71 years old!

This is an amazing feat, and it’s not alone as an indicator of how we as a people have developed.

Work. What we do for a living, to make ends meet, to put food on the table, or where we sometimes find fulfillment… this may be the best measure of showing how far we’ve climbed.

In a recent speech at Ashford University RealClearMarkets editor John Tamny spoke about the trends that are impacting the job market of the future, and he explained that there is real reason for tomorrow’s workers to be very optimistic.

“Be optimistic about the future, because it is going to be a great one. The reason it is going to be a great one is the work of the future is increasingly going to reflect what you’re interested in, what you’re passionate about. The work of the future is going to be about what will elevate you. You’ll get up in the morning and go and do something about which you’re very much an expert. In doing that which elevates your expertise you’re going to be more productive. Productive people accomplish enormous amounts. The future is bright…

The nature of work is changing before our eyes…

The New England Patriots, when they traveled to Minneapolis for the Super Bowl, brought a massive team of assistants and people working with the Patriots to make them great. This inclided three sleep coaches. Can you think of something more pleasurable than sleeping? But so advanced are we economically that football teams, because they want to prosper, have people who coach you on how to sleep. Now what’s interesting about that, if you watched any of the proceedings of the Super Bowl you saw all sorts of people there who earn a good living being NFL insiders. Imagine that, there are people today who are paid to follow one of the most popular sports leagues in the world and report on its doings to people.

To everyone here: We are in the midst of something extraordinarily exciting taking place about work. It is a beautiful thing…

As Wolfgang Puck puts it, nowadays people choose to become a chef as an alternative to a lawyer or doctor. This is the world we live in. In a world of prosperity, more and more people divide what they do on a daily basis… If you have a passion for food you can make a living.”
