Comedian’s Nasty Commentary Steals the Show at the White House Correspondents Dinner

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is often referred to as “Nerd Prom” by the same navel-gazing correspondents who attend.

During the Obama years, the dinner’s were often star-studded affairs where the Republicans were routinely mocked, and the President was gently cajoled.

In fact, the most famous WHCD comedian segment of the Obama years didn’t actually make fun of the President at all and instead used him as a prop to lambaste the President’s opponents.

This was despite the President’s unprecedented attacks on the First Amendment.

From the Washington Times:

Mr. Obama’s administration set dangerous precedents, and the left, for years has been shutting down the opposition through their use of “safe-spaces” and “trigger warnings.”

“For nearly eight years, President Obama massively expanded his authority on national security issues: on the prosecution of whistleblowers, secret surveillance courts, wars without congressional authorization, and drone campaigns without public oversight,” wrote Tim Mak of the Daily Beast. “During this time the left, with the exception of some civil liberties groups, remained largely silent.”

The New York Times and the ACLU had to sue Mr. Obama’s administration to get basic legal documents on the government’s position on targeted killing through drone strikes — as if some part of U.S. law should be secret.

And it was Mr. Obama’s Department of Justice that subpoenaed the telephone records of AP journalists to track down a leak. It also investigated Fox News journalist James Rosen and named him as a “co-conspirator” in a leak about North Korea’s nuclear program. The Justice Department charged Stephen Jin-Woo Kim, a State Department contractor who was Mr. Rosen’s source, with violating the Espionage Act.

“The Justice Department used security badge access records to track the reporter’s comings and goings from the State Department, according to a newly obtained court affidavit,” The Post reported at the time. “They traced the timing of his calls with a State Department security adviser suspected of sharing the classified report. They obtained a search warrant for the reporter’s personal emails.”

Mr. Obama used the Espionage Act against government whistle-blowers who shared secret information with reporters more than any other administration in history, the Daily Beast’s Mr. Mak reported.

Now that’s some scary stuff.

The media fought back against President Obama’s attacks (sometimes) but they largely ignored the reality that Obama was far more anti-free media than any President since Nixon. Today, they attack President Trump as fiercely anti-First Amendment because of the way the President SPEAKS about them… but the President has never acted against the free press. (Unlike Obama.) There is no reporter being unjustly persecuted by the administration, there is no media outlet having their phone records subpoenaed, there is no actual attack coming from the White House – other than the President calling them out for their bias against his administration.

So, in reality, who was worse on First Amendment issues? The guy using government power to persecute the media? Or the guy complaining that the media wasn’t being fair? I don’t think it’s hard to see the truth here.

Nevertheless, the media, including the White House Correspondents Association, loved President Obama and they continue to pour vitriol on to the Trump administration.

Over the weekend they held their annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) and while the night was supposed to be about unifying the press and the administration, it ended up being about the leftwing media unfairly attacking the Trump administration… again.

The comedian hired to deliver the laughs was a general unknown named Michelle Wolf. Wolf is a rising star who is best known for her raunchy, profanity laced  comedy.

While WHCD dinner comedians are generally expected to poke fun at everyone, but to keep things light, Wolf was repeatedly as vicious as possible and aimed most of her acerbic vulgarity at the women of the Trump administration.

Even some of the media members in attendance were shocked at how unfunny the entire debacle was.

  • CNN’s Jeff Zeleny: “It was an embarrassment in the room and surely to the audience at home.”
  • N.Y. Times’ Maggie Haberman: “That @PressSec sat and absorbed intense criticism of her physical appearance, her job performance, and so forth, instead of walking out, on national television, was impressive.”
  • N.Y. Times’ Peter Baker: “I would vote to leave the comedy acts to comedy shows and stick to journalism at journalism dinners.”

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny said the President won just by skipping the “cringeworthy” and “unfunny” event.

While the Correspondents Association President, Margaret Talev, defended her decision to hire Wolf, she also argued that the dinner was supposed to be about bringing unity, not division. But other members of CNN’s panel wondered if the night would actually make it even harder for the media to appear unbiased in their reporting on Trump.

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you can see the action below.

Wolf focused her most vitriolic and unfunny material on the women of the White House – namely Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kellyanne Conway, and Ivanka Trump. She mocked Sanders’ looks, and even called for physical violence against Conway. She also spent much time repeating the refrain that everyone in the Trump administration were  liars.

She called Sanders an “Uncle Tom” for women saying, “And I’m never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders, you know? Is it Sarah Sanders, is it Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is it Cousin Huckabee, is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? What’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know. Aunt Coulter.”

Her bit about Conway was similarly ugly: “She has the perfect last name for what she does, Conway … You guys have got to stop putting Kellyanne on your shows. All she does is lie. If you don’t give her a platform, she has nowhere to lie. It’s like that old saying, if a tree falls in the woods, how do we get Kellyanne under that tree? I’m not suggesting she gets hurt. Just stuck. Stuck under a tree.”

If you’re up for the task, you can watch the ugly roasting of Sarah Huckabee Sanders below. Notice the grace with which Sanders endures the nasty roasting.

Be warned some of the videos below contain vulgarity.

Here’s Wolf’s full “performance.”

For her part, Wolf cannot believe that people are taking offense at her attack on Sanders’ looks… when the focus should have been on the fact that Wolf called her a liar every chance she got.
