While the California National Guard is going to the border, they are still resisting immigration enforcement.

When I saw the headline saying that Jerry Brown was sending California National Guard troops to the border, I though it meant he may have capitulated. But that’s unlikely. Brown has decided that he wants the California National Guard to get federal funds.

The federal funds are attached to an anti-crime program. National guardsmen will be assigned in many location, including the Southern border.

If these guardsmen feel the same way about immigration enforcement as state politicians, I don’t think anyone should want their “assistance.”

The Daily Caller reports, “California’s Jerry Brown Agrees To Send National Guard To Border.

California Gov. Jerry Brown announced Wednesday that he will accept federal funds to add National Guard members to a statewide anti-crime program, but did not say how many of those troops would go to the U.S.-Mexico border as a part of President Donald Trump’s order.

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Pentagon chief Jim Mattis, Brown said 400 additional National Guard Troops would join the 250 assigned to an ongoing program to combat transnational crime. The additional staffing will allow the Guard to support law enforcement operations against transnational gangs, human traffickers and drug smugglers “throughout the state,” he said.

The President tweeted his appreciation for the governor’s decision.

It was possibly good of Trump to be nice, but Jerry Brown isn’t really cooperating. There are other statements in the letter:

But let’s be crystal clear on the scope of this mission. This will not be a mission to build a new wall. It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence ands seeking a better life. And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration law.

Here are the facts: there is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California. Overall immigrant apprehensions on the border last year were as low as they’ve been in nearly 50 years (and 85 percent of the apprehensions occurred outside of Calfornia).
