Not satisfied with Assad or Putin, McCain blames Trump for an event that threatens to keep American troops in Syria.
Normally, the fact that Senator McCain blames Trump for something is a big yawn because he seems to blame Trump on every day that ends in “Y.” But he did take it to a new level yesterday, blaming Trump for the chemical attack.
No this is not the same as Trump blaming George W. Bush for 9/11. The President is officially responsible for the protection of the United States from foreign attack. Under the Constitution, no one is responsible for protecting foreigners from other foreigners on foreign soil. Syria is outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. government.
The Washington Post reports, “McCain takes his Trump criticism to a whole new level, suggesting blame for chemical weapons attack in Syria.”
“President Trump last week signaled to the world that the United States would prematurely withdraw from Syria,” McCain said. “Bashar Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers have heard him, and emboldened by American inaction, Assad has reportedly launched another chemical attack against innocent men, women and children, this time in Douma.”
It is unlikely that Vladimir Putin, Bashar al-Assad are to blame for the chemical attack, assuming it really took place. Why would Assad use chemical weapons when he had reason to hope President Trump would withdraw from Syria?
This is so obvious, that even the Washington Post questions the Assad story and even suggests (only by implication) it was a false flag attack carried out by Syrian “rebels.”
It also seems entirely possible that the chemical weapons attack could prolong the U.S. presence […]. If Assad is looking forward to the United States being gone, this would seem to be a somewhat odd course of action.
In a way, this gives McCain an argument that Trump bears some responsibility. He suggested that our forces might withdraw from Syria and the terrorists we sponsor wanted to stop that from happening. But then McCain would have to admit we’re supporting people who kill civilians with gas just to manipulate opinion. That would be a tacit admission the sociopaths in our government who armed those terrorists in the first place would be much more to blame than Trump.
In other words, John McCain is more responsible for the chemical attack than Donald Trump.
