Use the Military to Build the Wall?

An interesting notion was offered up for suggestion by our President on Sunday.

Why not have the military build the wall along our Southern border with Mexico?

Well, maybe not the military exactly, but use our military and its funding to get the wall built… because the wall is vital to our national defense?

He didn’t go into specifics (how specific can you get on Twitter) but it did spark an interesting conversation online, and some folks argued that it’s not the first time the President has made this suggestion.

Back in December, he articulated a new way forward on National Defense and explained that border security would be an integral part of keeping our nation safe.

“First, we must protect the American people, the homeland and our great American way of life,” President Trump said. “This strategy recognizes that we cannot secure our nation if we do not secure our borders.”

“So, for the first time ever, American strategy now includes a serious plan to defend our homeland,” he added. “It calls for the construction of a wall on out southern border, ending chain migration and the horrible visa and lottery programs, closing loopholes that undermine enforcement, and strongly supporting our Border Patrol agents, ICE officers, and Homeland Security Personnel.”

So, it’s an interesting argument that holds merit.

Whenever we discuss border security, it’s usually in a broader context of national security – whether because of the dangers of illegal immigration, or because of the threat of terrorism, or even the more mundane threat of a foreign power sending some threatening device inside our borders.

Securing the border is a vital part of securing our national defense, so perhaps funding for the border wall is something that should be discussed in a broader “national defense” context?

At the very least, it’s an idea that should not be dismissed out of hand simply because we haven’t thought about it in this context before.
