The gun walkout was a contrived protest by school faculty and one student demonstrated against it.
There’s a story circulating that a student was suspended for refusing to participate in the gun walkout. IJR got the headline right: “Ohio Student Suspended for Refusing to Leave Classroom During Gun Control Walkout.”
Their story begins:
A high school student in Hilliard, Ohio, didn’t want to pick sides in the contentious gun debate surrounding Wednesday’s “National Walkout,” so he stayed in class instead of joining the largely anti-gun protest or an alternative “study hall.”
Hilliard Davidson High School senior Jacob Shoemaker was then reportedly slapped with a suspension.
The school objected to the claim that they had suspended a student for not participating in the gun walkout “protest.” As the local TV 10 reported, “District: Post saying Hilliard student suspended over walkout refusal is fake.”
Hilliard City Schools said a post claiming a student was suspended for not participating in National Walkout Day is false.
The letter in the post says the student would be suspended for Thursday for refusing to leave a classroom during the walkout.
Stacie Raterman, Director of Communications, said the information in the post is false and no students were suspended for participating or not participating in the walkout.
It seems that the school wanted to divide the studens and Shoemaker got the definite idea that they were dividing according to politics. Those walking out favored gun control and those sitting in the library (where the media would not see them) were in favor of the second amendment.
But he thought the point of school was to learn so he staged his own protest by refusing to leave the classroom. Then he accepted his punishment.
He was the only real student protester that day!
