Trump Allegedly Turned Down Deal with Schumer

On Friday evening, Senate Democrats claim that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and President Donald Trump were close to reaching a deal with funding, but then Trump walked away from it.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said, “There was virtually a deal, a comprehensive agreement, between Chuck Schumer and the president, and he walked away from it after he talked to his hard right.”

A Senate aide backed Blumenthal’s statement.

Honestly, if this is true and if that deal included amnesty for illegal immigrants then I am glad President Trump walked away! We are putting America first, and that means putting Americans first!

With the failure of reaching a deal, the government shut down at midnight on Friday and federal businesses have closed with the exception of essential personnel. However, since the shut down happened on Friday, Congress has the weekend to real an agreement before federal offices reopen on Monday.

The Hill reports:

The House-passed bill to fund the government through mid-February has failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a procedural hurdle.

The unraveling of a potential agreement between Schumer and Trump is a dramatic development from Friday afternoon, when Schumer, after speaking with the president, went to the White House to talk about the looming shutdown.

The move sparked a wave of anxiety among Republicans, as Trump had sided with Democrats during a September funding discussion.

Trump said in a tweet after the meeting that they had an “excellent” discussion, while Schumer said they had made progress but still had divisions.

Trump tweeted on Friday evening,  “Dems want a Shutdown in order to help diminish the great success of the Tax Cuts, and what they are doing for our booming economy.”

He added, “Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. in order to power through mess!”
