Welcome to 2018! Oregonians Freak Out Over Pumping Their Own Gas

I did not know that any full service gas stations still existed. However, I was apparently wrong…

The idea of pulling up to a gas station, and someone else pumping my gas while I sit in the warm car sounds appealing. However, it is 0dd to me that Oregonians have gone decades with someone else pumping their gas.

What’s even more interesting to me is that they are going crazy over Oregon Governor Kate Brown signing a legislation that went into effect on January 1st, requiring people to start pumping their own gas.

Local news reports:

The law, more specifically, no longer requires a gas attendant between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in counties with fewer than 40,000 people.

And Oregonians are freaking out.

In a Facebook post, KTVL asked their audience what they thought about the new law.

A few of the erratic responses included:

  • “No! Disabled, seniors, people with young children in the car need help. Not to mention getting out of your car with transients around and not feeling safe too. This is a very bad idea. Grrr.”
  • “Not a good idea, there are lots of reason to have an attendant helping, one is they need a job too. Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Besides I don’t want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes. I agree Very bad idea.”

However, some people like me found it strange that there were people who did not pump their own gas:

  • “If you read the comments on here you’d think that 48 other states are total anarchies run by neglectful parents and people who hate the elderly. Your kid can sit in the car for the 3 minutes it takes you to pump gas. It’s not about safety, you’re just lazy.”
  • What anarchy riddled sort of state is Oregon that people are afraid of gas station transients? Is that a problem over there in the West, roving bands of gas station marauders?

Then of course there are the jokesters who mocked and teased the people in a frenzy over the new law:

  • “I’ll never forget the first time I had to pump my own gas. I had to fight off a bear that was standing in front of the pump. Then, I endured a hail of bullets from enemy sniper fire while trying to swipe my card. When I pulled the pump handle from the docking station, it set off a series of booby traps, and the next thing I knew I was in my own version of Tomb Raider. Once I was done, a group of transients chased me in a tactical helicopter for miles because they wanted my tank of gas for making Nazi meth. You Oregonians had it so easy.”

Now, there is only one state left that allegedly bans self-service gas stations, and that is New Jersey.
