President Donald Trump did what many presidents before him promised to do, yet never followed through with. He officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Former Navy SEAL and Congressman Scott Taylor told The Hill that he believes Trump absolutely made the right choice, even in light of the security concerns.
“It’s a big change, it’s a big statement in the region, and there is potential for chaos with it, there’s no question about it,” Taylor continued, “We should be aware of it, but it’s America’s policy, it’s what we believe and we should act on it. We should not be afraid to do so.”
Still, Trump signed his own waiver on moving the embassy, which officially puts off the move for another six months.
Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly advised Trump against moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, fearing blowback in the Arab world.
However, despite those concerns, many GOP lawmakers encouraged the decision and claimed that we should not worry about the threats.
Rep. John Culberson said, “America should never change our foreign policy based on an assumption that we’re going to offend a group of Islamic radicals,” he continued, “America should always do the right thing for the right reason and stand by our allies, and America has no stronger ally on earth than the people of Israel.”
Culberson added, “The Trump administration is not going let another Benghazi happen because President Trump is going to aggressively and assertively restore respect for the United States of America, restore respect for our military and protect our diplomats and American citizens overseas — no matter what.”
