A 17-year-old illegal immigrant, who is currently 15-weeks pregnant, attempted to get an abortion. However, the Trump administration allegedly sought to block it.
According to The Hill, Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers are backing the Department of Health and Human Services’ decision to prevent the teen from leaving the shelter she is at to get an abortion at a clinic. They claim that they won’t allow her to leave unless it is to ‘exit the country’ or unless she is ‘released to a U.S. sponsor.’
Lawyers from the Department of Justice (DOJ) defended a decision by the Department of Health and Human Services to not let the 17-year-old travel to a Texas clinic to obtain an abortion, BuzzFeed News reported.
The girl, identified in court as “Jane Doe,” has been fighting to have the abortion since she was first detained at the U.S. border with Mexico on Sept. 11.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued on the girl’s behalf, calling for an immediate court order to allow her to have the procedure, which was granted Wednesday.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered the government to “promptly and without delay” allow the girl to visit a nearby abortion provider.
Chutkan claims to be “astounded” that the girl may be forced to carry the baby or leave the country.
First of all, she is an illegal immigrant. She is not a citizen here. Therefore, yes, she should be forced to leave. Not to mention, abortion is murder. We should not be enabling a criminal to kill her child.
Chutkan stated, “Just because she’s here illegally doesn’t mean she doesn’t have constitutional rights.”
She added, “The government certainly had no problem taking her against her will to receive pregnancy counseling,” in reference to officials allowing the teen to go to a religious center to receive counseling.
